Karl's POV I walked into the gathering that was waiting for me. It was no longer only the council members that were present, the rest of the Pack members were there as well. I could see the members of my pack there too. I looked around and noticed that Princess Lyra was not yet here. I wondered if she was always this late to every gathering or she was just trying to piss me off right now. I stood in front of the burning fire as I waited for her to join me there.

“Absolutely not. He’s not your responsibility anymore.” Like hell he wasn’t! But before I could respond, the door burst open. Ulysses strode in, Luna Fiona right behind him. Kimberly suddenly stumbled backward dramatically, one hand pressed to her heart like I’d struck her, but I understood her games now. “I didn’t touch her!” I protested. “What is she doing here?” “She broke in,” Kimberley said quickly, her victim act sliding back into place. “I was trying to learn how to be a good mother, and she—”

Kimberly did nothing but stand still. The one that she kept to herself was exquisite; it had a golden hue and a stunning pattern made of black stones running along its length; when light was reflected off of it, the stones gave off a unique glow and glitter. "You should give them to your pals since they will be wearing these stunning outfits tonight, and you should also tell them to head to the servants' quarters right away. When you are finished with that, you should come back and meet me here. Kimberly received such instructions from Elena as she proceeded to search for other outfits as Elena was doing so.

The Blackwoods were the ones organising it this year, a prestigious duty that only served to fuel my stepmother's ego. ​It was, predictably, another avenue and opportunity for Vivienne Blackwoods to throw her weight around. She was everywhere, moving with theatrical purpose, ordering everyone and giving instructions to a host of hired help and socialites as if she was the undisputed matriarch of the Blackwoods clan. Her voice, sharp and high, grated on my nerves.

I looked down the hallway and through the other side, and there was actually no one in sight. My heart hammered as I approached the large double office doors with D. BLACKWOOD engraved on the metal plate. I forced my trembling hand to knock. No answer. Great. I knocked again. Still nothing. Screw it. I pushed the door open— —and froze in place. Damian Blackwood sat behind his massive black desk. Sharp suit. Cuffed sleeves. Jaw tight enough to crack a diamond. He didn’t look up at me. Not even a glance. I opened my mouth to speak but was cut off by his deep voice.

I cocked my head with my eyebrows raised. "Miss Blackwood is the most qualified investigator here," Kieran said sharply. "She stays." A muscle ticked in Damien's jaw, but he stepped aside. "As you wish. But I warn you, it's not pleasant." I'd seen plenty of unpleasant things in my three years as a hunter. Bodies torn apart by rogues, victims of vampire attacks drained so thoroughly they looked like husks, cursed objects that drove their owners to madness and self-mutilation. I thought I was prepared, even beyond what Damien could comprehend.

She seemed stunned, perhaps because no one had ever dared to reprimand her in front of her family. However, Jake was quick to react, saying, “Kim, I hope you’ve learned your lesson. Ms. Chloe is a prominent figure in Foswood, so you should learn from her.” Kimberly glared at him. “What could I possibly learn from her? Foswood is nothing! If she’s as capable as you say, why’d she come to Bourdamun? She might be impressive, but she still has to come here for projects, correct? Has she blinded you all with her pretty little face?”

Forget everything and ask the driver to drop me instead and leave this two here only. But reality doesn’t work that way. Sighing, I look at them, thinking to help them. But then unable to take the sight of them puking, I get down the car. "Take care of them, I'll just go get the keys fast!", I tell the driver and he nods. "Okay sir!", he says. "But please come soon...", he requests passing a side eye at them. "Okay..." I nod understanding his hesitation. Almost running the two minutes walk distance I stand outside the massive iron gates of Blackwood Company. For a moment, I didn’t move. Catching on my breath.

The black heretic was a title she earned after winning her case in the clave, being mated to a wolf she was not that loved by her kind either, but she was an honest person and a loving parent and a dear friend of my mother, yet she had a hint of pain in her I could never point out. Coming to the top of the room she addressed the guests with her warm smile, looking at her she welcomed and thanked everyone her, and invited us to the main room where the ceremonies way taking place.

They were slaughtered by what I now know were vampires. Alcide and I instantly bonded over the hatred of our math teacher Mrs. Ecker who had a sick pleasure of making everyone miserable. Alcide’s parents were happy to take in an orphaned witch and even helped me learn to control my powers. They attempted to get me into some of the surrounding covens but I was always rejected as soon as they heard my last name, Blackwood. So I’ve been a rogue witch ever since. Which is fine by me because now my powers are free to be all mine and not bound by the elders.
