I picked up 'Kimi Dake o Mamoritai' on a whim because the cover art looked great, and ended up binging the whole thing over a weekend. The core is a fantasy romance, but with a neat twist: the male lead, Leon, is your classic OP isekai protagonist who's tired of the hero life and just wants to retire peacefully. He fails, obviously, because he gets roped into protecting the heroine, Chloe, who’s got a massive bounty on her head from various factions. The 'protect' part of the title is literal—it’s a constant escort mission against assassins, political schemes, and ancient monsters.
What kept me hooked wasn't just the action, which is solid, but the dynamic between the two leads. Leon’s world-weary sarcasm bouncing off Chloe’s initial fear and then her growing spine is genuinely fun. She’s not a damsel; she’s got her own latent magic that becomes a plot point. The story does shift gears about halfway through from pure survival to unraveling why Chloe is so important, digging into a conspiracy about sacred lineages and a forgotten war. The ending wraps up the main threat, but leaves enough threads about the world’s lore that you can see where a sequel could go. I’d say it’s a satisfying one-volume adventure with better character banter than most.
