“You’re right. I usually don’t. But I do want to see what you picked.” I hesitated, then slid the box toward him. His fingers brushed mine as he picked it up. That touch… my chest fluttered. He opened the box slowly, carefully, and his eyes widened, just a fraction, before masking it again. “You made this?” he asked softly, holding a custom leather-bound notebook with our initials subtly embossed. “Sabrina… this is…” His jaw flexed. “Thoughtful. I had cleaned his wound with antiseptic from the staff breakroom and managed to get some water into him. Now, he slept. His breathing was shallow but steady. I sat on the floor under the dim light of a single bulb, the Ledger heavy in my lap. Open the back cover, he had said. Rip it open. I ran my fingers over the leather binding. It was old, cracked leather. I took my pocketknife and carefully sliced the stitching on the inside of the back cover. It peeled away. Hidden between the leather and the cardboard stiffener was a single, folded piece of yellowed paper.

Cole brings it to me, sitting back down on the couch while the kids roll around with their toys on the rug in front of us. Maeve is slack in Aviva’s arms, both of them fast asleep on the opposite couch. I smile at the image and quietly rip the paper away. It’s a book. Smaller than average and bound by fresh leather. There’s no title engraved on the cover. I look up at Cole, thinking he’d be smiling and a little pink in the cheeks in anticipation for my reaction, but he looks grave. I open it. It’s a printed rendition of the Book of Whispers.

I mumble, heading to my office. I sit down in my chair and put the book on the desk. I look closely at the cover and realize it isn't leather, but some soft dark skin, more on a fur than the normal boom cover. My guess would be some.random animal with fur but I think sime fur isn’t smooth as this. I turn to the first page and mutter a curse under my breath. I read the tiny scrawl with widening eyes.

Also, the leather has a glossy texture that catches the weak lights in the room. This journal is beautiful. But the contents are probably also dangerous. On the cover, there is no title. Also no decoration. Just plain shiny black leather and a clasp holding the pages closed. Gently, I open the clasp and lift the cover. Next, I turn to the first page, my hands trembling slightly. On the first page, the first thing I see is a short paragraph written in a handwriting I can recognize anywhere in the world, even in my sleep. My mum’s handwriting.

I squinted my eyes and glared at her. Tentatively, she removed the paper cover of her book. Underneath was a far cry from the gently paper cover. The paper cover had a street with cherry blossoms blooming on each side. The title ‘Never Apart’ indicated a soft romance. The ‘real’ book cover, the one hidden under cherry blossoms was a half naked man, He had no shirt and showed tight muscles. all over his torso were tattoos His hand enclosed the throat of a blonde girl, she was dressed in a shirt probably his because of how large it is. Her head is thrown back in obvious pleasure and the title is ‘Choke me Harder.’ Definitely nothing a sophisticated young miss should read.

But what catches my eye is s a stack of books I’ve never seen before. They are in several different shades of blue, but all covered in the same material. It looks like a leather but more textured, maybe another animal hide? They have the most beautiful gold writing on them and I am just simply, drawn to them. I want to sit with them and hold them, I want to stroke the covers and open them but not just read them I want to devour the contents of these books. It’s a weird feeling. I feel as drawn to them as I do to Leo.

I touch its glass cover and to my surprise, it vanishes in just a snap. The book floats mid-air and emits blinding light. It starts glowing and the pages start to turn. A few moments afterward, the pages stop turning. The glow starts to vanish, and the book moves toward my hand. Just like the book I was reading earlier, it has a leather hardbound cover and its title are embroidered with gold. 'The Untold' I said as I've read the title. It was smaller, bound in cracked red leather. There was no title on the spine, but the cover... Jael went still. "Amalia," he said softly. "Look at this."
