The sanctuary was vast, cold, and drowning in amber gloom. High, vaulted ceilings disappeared into the darkness above, supported by massive marble pillars wrapped in carved vines. Giant, stained-glass windows depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian cast long, distorted geometric shadows across the rows of empty wooden pews.
