She said in one go, making all of us start thinking about it again. To ease everybody’s confusion, I pulled out the old books I had seen earlier and flicked open the pages to find the runes we had studied earlier. Pointing to a text paragraph on it, I read it out aloud. “Runes are powerful magical alphabets used in ancient scriptures that hold the key to unlocking the potential within you. All these alphabets hold a special meaning and they can be used to connect to the power that rules over all of us, sitting in the heaven. Use them cautiously for these can bind you as much as these runes can free you.”

A golden rune floated in Chase's palm, shimmering with radiant energy. The rune collided with the rusted blade, scattering dazzling sparks into the air. "What?!" the elder exclaimed, his pupils constricting. "Do you think a piece of worthless scrap metal can harm me? How laughable." Chase shook his head. He flicked his fingers, and the golden rune expanded to the size of a hand. In an instant, it transformed into a blazing flame that radiated intense heat. It spread in all directions.

The runes were a cute way to read fortunes and make quick coin, but in the right paws, the Orangelo runes were a formidable power just like the Tarot deck that their grandsire had gifted to Killian shortly before Grandfather Lorenzo had disappeared from their lives. It is a rune cloth like the one Gudrun has. I look at her with surprise. "Is this for me ?" She nods, looking very excited. "You need one for Your runes… you need to make them first though". Then she starts teaching me about the 24 different runes, all taken from the old Nordic alphabet the futhark. How they are separated in 3 different houses and what the different ones represent.

The King and the Prince stared as though they were watching some divine miracle unfold. “That’s enough,” the King said, his voice reverent. “You can release the stone now. I’ve seen all I need to see.” Obediently, I withdrew my hand and the runes dissipated just as the wind died down. I glanced at the King. His eyes were locked on me, his brows furrowed deeply.

I exclaimed to the surprise of the noblemen and courtiers present. I expected to be rushed by the guards but when I saw none of them move, I was undeterred. The man on that throne was no king. I wonder which of them is the lesser evil. Alaric who ruined my life, or the King who would have forced his son spend the rest of his life with a woman he didn’t love. Said woman is me.
