Ran lifted King and placed him on his shoulders while King chuckled at the impromptu ride onto his uncle's back. King looked out without fear at Vampires, shape-shifters, Lycans, pixies and fairies, possibly a leprechaun, and many other types of Supernaturals I didn't recognize. King held onto Ran's head for balance and raised his hand. "Hi. I'm King of the Underworld." He peeked at me. "Okay, I'm King Russell." "You are King of the Underworld!" I called out. "That's your name, and you be proud of it!"

However, these families’ main job is to protect the crown and the kingdom and it is said that they’re very good at it. Due to their contribution, the Fire Kingdom’s military is well known in the continent. Aside from that, they are also very adept in rune magic. Although their mastery over this field does not exceed the Water Kingdom, they have their own scripture that they used as runes that is second only to the Water Kingdom. This mastery over rune magic is one of the keys in winning some positions in the war. However, that does not mean that the King and Queens are only symbolic figure to the kingdom. They still hold the highest position and the ones to decide what happens next.

"Then we buy you time." I turned to Kael, Ronan, and Zephyr. "Protect the King. Keep the guards off him until every lock is broken." Kael drew his blade, his obsidian eyes blazing. "We've got your back." Ronan's claws extended, the steel gleaming. "Let them come." Zephyr moved to the King's side, his silver eyes sharp, his hands glowing with a faint, blue light. "I will guard the rear." The King pressed his hands to the first lock, his golden eyes closing in concentration. The runes flickered, resisting his touch. But slowly, painfully, they began to dim.

"But I've been comparing them to rune mechanics. There are similarities that bother me." I sat, leaning forward to examine her notes. "Explain runes to me. Simple terms." "Runes are older than sigils." Her finger moved across symbols she'd drawn. "More rigid, more structured. They require specific activation—blood sacrifice, incantation, or lunar alignment like the Blue Moon. Once activated, they focus raw magic into targeted outcomes. Healing, binding, corruption, whatever the caster intends." "And they're harder to destroy than sigils?" "Significantly." She nodded. "Sigils can be disrupted with counter-magic relatively easily. She looked up and saw the Feral King standing over her, his hand raised to strike again. ​"Kaelen!" she screamed, not at the monster, but at the man trapped inside. "Kaelen, look at me! Remember the infirmary! Remember the scent of the lilies! You told me I tasted like fire! Use that fire, Kaelen! Burn him out!" ​The Feral King’s hand froze mid-air. ​A tremor ran through the King’s body. The purple runes on his skin began to pulse violently, turning from violet to a searing, brilliant silver.

“King Kael is leading the attack himself.” A slow smile spread across my face. Course he was. For all his growth… For all his wisdom… He was still predictable when it came to those boys. Good. Where I wanted him. ⸻ I dismissed the guard. Turned back to the altar. The runes were brighter now. They pulsed beneath the stone like veins carrying light of blood. I spent years translating fragments of forgotten languages. Searching ruined temples. Buying secrets from dying priests. Killing those who refused to share what they knew.

“Rune will do better.” My brother Marrow should have been king. He should have stood where I stood. Instead, he was dead. Murdered. And I intended to find out who did it. If I didn’t return from the mountains, Rune would be crowned. My nephew was only twenty-two. He still had lessons ahead of him. Still had mistakes to make. “To prevent you from punching another one of my men’s teeth out.” I froze at that voice. No way, it was way too familiar even though I've only heard it once. I turned my head and my heart sank at the sight before me. There he was looking tall, pale, and elegant in a cruel kind of way. Rune. The Vampire King. I remembered that face, I remembered the day I ran into the woods, the hostility and amusement he had given to me and the unspoken war between his kind and ours especially at the fact he was enemies with Damien.

“That’s the spirit.” The vault entrance was nearly lost beneath a snarl of vines, roots, and years of decay. Nature had tried to erase it. But the earth couldn’t quite smother Thorne’s legacy. Black steel reinforced the door, its surface etched with runes that flickered faintly in the torchlight. I pressed my palm against the central sigil and the runes flared, unlocking with a sound like grinding bone. The steel slab groaned open, revealing a staircase descending into pitch-black silence.
