The Mate Games
Another pair is lugging crates of candles.
My steps slow. Something about it all feels… off.
I stop one of the servants, a boy who can’t be older than sixteen. He freezes when I touch his shoulder, eyes going wide.
“What’s going on?” I ask. My voice comes out low, rough from disuse.
He stares at me, swallowing hard. “My… my king?”
I narrow my eyes. “Why are there flowers? Banners? What is all this for?”
He looks like he might faint. His mouth opens and closes before he finally whispers, “Preparations, my king.”
