"You're alive! We heard the Hall collapsed, we heard the heirs were taken, we thought..." She broke off into a sob, her face buried in Kira’s shoulder. Ryan and Jake crowded in behind her, their eyes wide and watery. Ryan reached out, awkwardly patting Kira’s arm, while Jake just stood there, his jaw working as he tried to keep his composure. "God, Kira, you look like you crawled through a furnace," Jake said, his voice cracking. Kira hugged them back, her eyes closing as she leaned into the embrace. For a moment, the Blood Heir and the warrior disappeared, and she was just the girl who had shared smuggled snacks and bad jokes in the archives.

"I hired some killers to get rid of those bastard children and they couldn't....do it.
