The Wolf's Game
Its heart races against mine, wild and frightened, but alive.
I stroke its fur with my uninjured hand, and something shifts beneath my touch, a shimmer, like magic recoiling. Its glow dims. It’s still a rabbit, but not quite. Its eyes blink up at me, too intelligent. Curious.
“What are you?” I whisper.
“Beautiful,” someone says behind me.
Kael leans against a tree a few paces away, with his own rabbit sleeping in his arms. His golden eyes shine in the moonlight. He’s been there long enough to see everything.
