I rested my hand on the swell, feeling the baby kick lightly against my palm.
“You like the sunshine too, don’t you?” I murmured, smiling to myself.
Clara stood a few feet away, ever vigilant in her palace guard uniform despite the heat. I’d tried to convince her to at least take off her jacket, but she’d refused, insisting on maintaining a professional appearance. Still, I caught her tilting her face toward the sun occasionally, her eyes briefly closing as she absorbed the warmth. Even Clara wasn’t immune to the perfect weather.
“You know,” I called over to her, “you’re allowed to relax a little. No one’s going to attack me in the middle of the palace pool.”
