I began gathering the wooden blocks, but the sharp clicking noise of the toys immediately woke Coco up.
"Oh, shit," Nico groaned under his breath.
Coco broke into a loud, miserable cry. But before Nico could even lean forward to comfort her, she scrambled off the couch and ran straight toward me instead.
"J," she whimpered through her tears, looking up at me with her tiny teeth showing.
"That's not J," Nico corrected automatically. He went quiet when I stood up and gently lifted her into my arms.
It was funny, almost terrifying, how she could recognize the real me even through this disguise. Nico watched us, his head tilting in pure bewilderment.
