I declared, challenging his attempt to keep me behind. "Fine," he conceded, though his voice carried a warning tone. "But stay behind me," he added firmly, his gaze locking onto mine as if to emphasize the importance of his words. Killian quickly located a sturdy stick, his movements deliberate and calculated. With precision, he pressed the stick against the trigger of the trap, disabling it carefully. I watched, filled with admiration for his skill and strength. I opened it cautiously. The stench hit me first: the horrible smell of decay. Inside, placed on a pile of shredded newspaper, was a dead rat. Its body was bloated and crawling with maggots. Beside it lay a note, and written with red ink that looked disturbingly like blood read a phrase: "Traitors die slowly." I immediately dropped the box as if I had just been burned, my hand quickly flying to my mouth to stifle a scream. The burner phone in my pocket suddenly felt heavier and more pronounced.

Shadows stirred, coalescing into an ominous form. From the darkness emerged a creature, its eyes gleaming with an unsettling intelligence. It was a rat. It was a big, fucking rat. And as I stared at it, as still as possible, it sniffed in the air, trying to find what was making the racket, which was when I realized it was blind. Calling it big was an understatement, it was fucking massive, bigger than a German shepherd, with it's eyes as red as blood and it's claws as long as a dagger. But that wasn't what made the hairs at the back of my neck stand. That wasn't what sent shiver down my spine.

With this in mind, I head to my locker to put in my phone and my food for later, but that’s when I notice a graffiti on the metal door. It’s written in bright red lipstick, the word ‘SLUT’. My heart starts to hammer fast in my chest. My bag falls from my slackened grip. What is this about? Is this a petty kind of mistake? I don’t think I have done anything to deserve this label, and maybe it’s just some sort of prank…. With shaking hands, I open my locker, ignoring the lipstick graffiti. Most of the time I ran out as soon as it was over to throw up. One of them said he had punished a traitor. He had the man tied to a boat and his hands were tied behind his back while a round metal with an opening was tied to his stomach. The round opening was fitted on top of his naked belly and it was made hot in such a way that their skin was very soft. Different goodies that rats delighted in were placed on his stomach to attract the rats.

“Well, rats are kinda common in the city. But what do you mean by bigger?” I shrug, and she blinks a few times, waiting for another answer, and luckily, gives up soon, turning to the shelves. “So, the rat-exterminator-2000 is our best-seller, but if you need to catch something bigger, I would go for this. I guess it is for opossums.” Shuddering, I take the cage-like trap from her and turn it in my hands to inspect it. If I think of catching an animal with this and having to dispose of it, I really feel like throwing up my breakfast.
