She opened the book. The first pages were practical. A record of the Waiting: its stages, what to expect, how the territory responded. She read standing at the bookshelf, with Lucien beside her, close enough that she could feel his warmth against the cool air of the chamber. Neither of them spoke. The only sound was the occasional turn of a page. Then she reached the section headed On the Question of Pairing. She read it twice before she said anything. "The convergence isn't symbolic," she said finally. "You knew that."

I found it refreshing to pour my mind out to someone who doesn't totally detest me.
