A throb in my veins, cool and warm. My breath stuttered. “Come on. Get a grip,” I said to myself. I took the book and went back to the table and opened it, taking care of the delicate pages. Dust flew up in the air, silver in the dim light. I changed pages: the history of the pack, ancient battles, treaties, prominent men, Then the book stopped on a page without me deciding to stop. It fell open as if guided. A full-page sketch stared up at me. A girl of light and fire. Eyes like molten gold. Hair whipping around her like she stood in a storm. Her hands glowing.

Stamped into the cover was a symbol: an eye inside a triangle, surrounded by curling, intricate lines that almost seemed alive. “What is this?” Leila asked, keeping her voice steady. Christina gave her a look that said she was either testing her or trying to decide how much to say. “This,” she said at last, “is why you’ve been dodging mustard jackets and cleaning up after dead archaeologists.” Leila’s heart skipped a beat. She sat down, sliding the book toward her. It was heavier than it looked, its weight a promise of bad news. “Oh my! Explain,” she said, flipping it open.

Levi and Kenji let out loud spurts of laughter behind me as they watch my discomfort over the book.
