In the end, he left the room, slamming the door after muttering, “Behave yourself.” The bedroom fell into a suffocating silence. I sat on the bed for a very long time. On that night, my longing for a family faded, and my love for my brother turned cold. As for Shawn, he would never know the real truth behind why I went blind in the first place. I knew because I was awake and the dark has a specific and particular quality when there is light somewhere in it, the way it is not entirely dark, the way the knowing of the light changes the quality of the dark even when you cannot see it. I knew she was awake. I lay in the dark and I held the words I had found and I thought: tomorrow. At one-twenty the light went out. The dark became the specific and complete dark of a hallway at one-twenty in the morning.
