I reached out and took his hand. His skin was dry and cool, his grip surprisingly firm for a man of his years. I held on a second longer than necessary, staring him straight in the eyes. "I truly hope you’re a man who keeps his word, Mr. Whitmore."
Eugene’s lip quirked up into a small, enigmatic smile. "You wound me, dear, being so suspicious of my character. I am a gentleman, after all."
I pulled my hand back, feeling a chill. Exactly what a person who wasn't a gentleman would say, I thought bitterly.
