The faint sound of a generator hummed beneath the ringing in their ears.
And then came the click—soft but deadly.
“Stop!” Lily shouted, freezing in her tracks. Her eyes darted to the floor: a pressure plate hidden beneath a thin layer of dust, wired to a set of grenades strung beneath the crates.
William halted instantly, his breath caught mid‑word. Adrian swore under his breath, crouching to examine it.
“Sir, she’s right. One step more and we’d all be gone.”
Lily exhaled slowly, then crouched, her hands steady as she worked the wires. Sweat trickled down her temple, but she didn’t falter. A final snip, and the tiny light on the detonator went dark.
