I muttered under my breath, though I wasn't sure who I was pleading with him or myself. The truth was, I was being selfish. I despised the fact that my motivation wasn't just about matchmaking or ensuring a perfect union, it was about money. The loans were crushing me, weighing down on me like a constant shadow, and no matter how much I tried to ignore it, I couldn't. I needed this. “I know. I just… I don’t know how.” The doctor hesitated, then pulled a small card from his pocket. “Look, I’m not supposed to do this, but a patient’s family mentioned something last week. There’s an agency that handles unusual arrangements. High paying ones. They call it spouse rental. Legal contracts for people who need money quick. Might be worth a call if you’re truly desperate.” Lina stared at the plain white card with only a phone number and the words “Elite Matches – Contract Services.” “Spouse rental? "As long as you can save her, I'll give you whatever you want, including my heart." Zackary fearfully brushed his hand over his heart which was beating strongly because of his emotions. And for some stupid. “She agreed to this marriage,” he continued. “I married her to give you shelter. But the debt must be paid.” He paused again, letting the words sink into my flesh like cold needles. “Thank you, sir for your kindness toward us.” I forced my voice to work. “We… we’ll find a way to repay you. Believe me. I can work…”
