You actually have good taste in books.” Jake’s mouth twitched. “First compliment I’ve ever gotten from you.” “Don’t get used to it.” She closed the book, her blonde hair spilling over her shoulders. “You’re full of surprises, Jake.” I cleared my throat from the doorway. “Am I interrupting? Or is this a two-person book club?” Celeste’s head snapped up. “Always,” she said, too quickly. Then she pasted on a smile. “Relax, Summer. We were just talking.”

“What’s your problem?” Clara laughed, soft and cutting. “I hate her, Leo. It's so small she reads it within a few hours. She goes at it in awe. She retreads it and is still shocked and blown away by how much valuable information this tiny book contains. She's about to put it away when she hears, “Memorize it!” Jolene repeats, “Memorize?” The voice repeats, “Learn it, live it, love it!”

Being alone with a good book and alcohol or caffeine is the best feeling in the world, probably better than sex. The next day, I walked into Monet's and met a group of ladies who were fine as hell.
