I'm super proud of my sister becoming Luna, she's such a lovely person and I know she'll be a great Luna. The women, children, and elderly usually go to the safe room at the packhouse but my dad insisted we have one in our basement, so he and Josh build one 5 years ago. It's great because we don't need to go outside when there's a sudden attack but it's not great when I'm here on my own. Of course, I have Bella but she's just a baby. It can get lonely and scary down here on my own but I always remind myself that my family are out there fighting to keep us safe. The least I can do is suck it up in here for a few hours.

He stood at the front of the room, smiling warmly. “Welcome to the Literature Society. I’m Nathan, your president”. The girl standing beside him, with curly red hair and a sharp gaze, spoke next. “I’m Rachel, the vice president. We’re glad to see so many new faces this year”. Finally, a third person, a quiet-looking guy with messy hair gave a brief nod. “I’m Leo, part of the core team” Nathan continued. “This club isn’t just about reading books. It’s about sharing ideas, writing your own stories, and exploring literature in all its forms. We organize poetry slams, writing workshops, book discussions, and even field trips”.

When the waiters brought out buckets of instant noodles, the entire room fell silent. Every guest froze. Then, the whispers started. Their expressions turned strange, eyes full of disdain. My mother-in-law, Nancy Tucker, looked like she had just swallowed poison. As for me, I acted like nothing was wrong. I picked up the microphone and cheerfully waved to everyone to start eating. "What are you all waiting for? Go on, eat. Don't tell me none of these flavors suit your taste," I said.

I sat on Xavier's lap, Dane and Theo on either side of me as we chatted with their parents, Marilyn already popping one of the faerie bottles and pouring four glasses. She handed one to me and I blinked in surprise. "If you're joining Book Club, you'll need to get use to the buzz." She winked. My ears twitched and they all chuckled. “You ready? We’re gonna be late.” “Oh, right book club.” The weekly meeting where everyone pretended to be invested in literature when really, the only reason half the group showed up was for free cookies. I dragged on my jacket, earpods that sat on the floor and my bag, forced a loud sigh, and followed her outside. The walk to the bookstore wasn’t long, but it felt heavier than usual, like the air itself was chewing on my nerves. The silence was literally choking me. The bookshop was tiny and warm, smelling like vanilla, old pages, and a little bit of cinnamon. Bells chimed when we pushed the door open. At the risk of sounding like Sawyer, this really did look like one of those cults that adjourned with an orgy. "Shall we start?" My god mother broke the tension almost as if she could read my thoughts aloud. "I'm just going to start by thanking Zade Cutler for showing up to our book club. I didn't know a man of your...ehm..caliber was interested in books" I smiled. A smile that had the Smith women swooning and had Claire rolling her eyes with disinterest.

Watching television had not quite worked out for Mercy either time that she had tried it, so she decided to spend her day reading a book. Luna Isabella had recommended something called Little Women to her, which she said was a classic, and so far, Mercy was enjoying it.
