Only there weren't smoking caterpillars or bunnies chasing time, but big mountains made of ice cream rising in the west and flying winged books singing the tune of their people. The sky was dark but lit up by lamposts that seemed to live their own lives, jumping until suddenly growing teeth and mouths to swallow any nearby flying insects. "Well, that's just not right," I said, terrified. What the hell did I just walk into! The grass was green like it was back home, but what frightened me was the mushrooms. "There’s poison in the soup. I can smell it. Powdered poisonous mushrooms — the kind that cause hallucinations and stomach spasms. It’s masked well, but I can smell the difference. This isn’t natural." My gaze dropped to the soup. Still steaming. Still innocent-looking. The scent was appetising. But the hint scent of the mushroom was there, faint and dangerously hidden. A trap. They wanted me to eat it. So, all the smiling faces and everything were nothing but betrayal. I forced a calm expression and looked up at Nova. “Would you join me?” I asked, gently patting the chair across from mine. “It’s lonely eating alone these days.” Nova blinked. “Pardon?”

I asked by my gestures. "Eating meatballs at Takim's," replied Julia by her gestures. In the living room, I saw a pile and rows of old books. Books were not like academic books. Even if it was called a novel, it might be from the action-conspiracy-horror-thriller-mystery genre. Well, the title alone already made people goosebumps.

Now you sit here and wait for me to cook them. Samson picked Lucasta up, put her back in the chair, and quickly added more wood to the stove. The kitchen that had been cold for a hundred years was now warm with a flickering fire. After ten minutes, the plate of mushrooms was placed in front of her. The scent from there made her crave. After he gestured, she bent down and ate. Compared to pies, mushrooms are much more delicious and tender, and very sweet. Throughout the afternoon, Samson spent all his time with Lucasta even though his eyelids almost drooped because he was so sleepy.

She scans the pages for a bit, and I try to see what she’s seeing, only to find the book written in that same odd alphabet as on the Keep’s door. A small frown suddenly furrows her brow. “Do you remember the color of those mushrooms?” “Blood red with yellow and black pustules,” I say. “It gave me a bad feeling the second I saw them.”

I spotted the mushrooms on the table. Helen smacked me on the back and grumbled, “What are you staring at? Hurry up and wash them!” I hesitated and asked, “Helen, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you bring these mushrooms home before. Are you sure they’re not poisonous?” Predictably, Helen brushed me off with her usual disdain. “Look at you. You’re so clueless. These are rare termite mushrooms, perfect for making chicken broth. They’re incredibly nutritious! I went out before dawn to stake my claim, or someone else would’ve grabbed them already!

I screamed loudly, my voice was loud enough to make Albert and Jasmine both stop in their way… I pulled string of my horse and halted it, in meantime I hopped down and went to check mushroom, upon looking closely I realized this at ‘table mushroom’ and very much edible. “Will mushroom satisfy your hunger?” I questioned Jasmine who had also hopped down from her horse and was now heading towards me, Albert was also following her. “What are we doing?” Albert questioned me “Having little morning treat before we regain our journey” I told Albert and showed him bunch of mushroom in my hand. He seemed to understand me, and I again turned to Jasmine “How much do you want to eat?” I questioned her “I

Theodore’s POV I chopped the boren mushrooms while the spies slept. I was pretty sure none of them knew the difference between regular and magical ingredients, but I tried to meal prep while they slept just in case. The boren mushrooms had such a strange, gangly shape, but they had come to be one of my favorite additions to almost every meal for their flavor and how much they rejuvenated my magic. Smelling something burning, I turned back to the stove where the crinal was cooking at a simmer. Crinal was an allium similar to onions, but magical. That, and apparently, it cooked way faster than onions.
