’ A typical conversation with a drunken local might sound something like this. Local: “What’s your name?” Nicky: “Nicky.” Local: “That’s a girl’s name. You some sort of queer?” Nicky: “It’s short for Nikolai.” Local: “Nikolai? You a Russian?” Nicky: “It’s a Greek name.” Local: “Greek huh. That some kinda Jew?” Nicky: Stares ahead blankly, saying nothing. Local: Calls to his friends, “Hey, guys. We’ve got some sorta half-queer, half-jew thing goin’ on over here. Come take a look and see what you can make of it.”

Even though he’s smiled a couple of times, this is the first time Hammer actually laughs, and he tips his head back with it. “Oh damn, Mr. Hammer. That’s great. Can you imagine? Just Hammer, Luna. It’s a nickname from the force. It’s easier to go by my callsign to avoid confusion. Hesitation loses lives.” I’m starting to sense he has a lot of those dire little phrases. Charming. “I knew that, somewhere in the back of my mind. How do you get a nickname like Hammer? Is your name Hamilton or something? I can see why you’d shorten that.” I racked my brain, trying to think of other names that could end up as a builder’s tool.

“Geez, Alessandro! Be careful! You almost shot Nic!” Who's Nic? “Nic? Nicholas Rossi? Is that what he goes by in the underworld now after I killed him?! Nic the dick?! Well, he's a dick and a lunatic so he deserves the shitty title” I laughed to myself. That was funny. I heard shuffling and what sounded like….struggling? “No, Nic, wait. He's not in his right mind now!” “I don't care! He's gone overboard this time!” “Nic!” I heard fast footsteps.

he replied. "That's kind of you, but we're fine. Nick got us out in time." Nick was someone I should thank, he laid his life on the line for us. "What did Nik tell you?" Joseph asked. "Nick." I corrected him. "It's actually Nik for Nikolai." he explained. "I didn't know that, I've been calling him Nick all this time and he didn't bother to correct me." that was so like him. he was just like Nick...Nik not to say anything. He too polite.

I saw jizz run down her thigh as she pulled her pants back up. "I'm not done with you yet. Expect round two later." "Sure thing, BDE," she said. Wtf? "Another nickname?" I questioned as I turned towards the door. "Big Dick Energy, I think it has a nice ring to it," she snickered. Wow, just wow. I reached the stairs and called down. "On our way." To Natalia, I said, "I don't know whether to punish you or laugh with you. 'BDE'. Where did you come up with these names?"

The entire time Nick drove, he held my hand and was talking about baby names. "How about naming one Princess and the other Queenie?" He suggested. "I feel as if you are just mocking my name." "Ok, one girl can be called Mia and the other... Mercedes." "Or if we have boys. Elijah and Dylan." Nick nodded. “Those names sound good to me. But I'm one hundred percent sure that they will be girls." "Oh yeah, so you are up for tea parties and dress up. Remember, I'm a designer and I know your size."

Ingrid calls out. "Nickie?" Nick asked. I laughed. "Minaj." I mouthed to Nick and he smiles. "It rhymes with Annie. Now don't say you don't like it when I call you Nickie cos I'll take back my vote." Ingrid says. Nick laughs. "Okay boss." He salutes.

Ugh! Just such little contact already has me pressed to jump out of my own skin. But like hell if he’ll ever know that for sure. I park a hand over my hip, not slowing down my pace, “I know you’ve been gone for so long, but that name doesn’t stick anymore.” “Yeah,” He bites back easily, leaning in to whisper, “Heard ‘Harlot’ suits you so much better.” My eyes roll. If anything, that’s the nickname I hate the most, yet it’s the one that’s stuck the longest.

because regardless of their uniform for the evening, they always have a white cowboy hat, like a hero from an old spaghetti western. And just like characters from westerns, they all have ridiculous sounding nicknames that they use in lieu of their names–like “The Kid” or “Steel Toe Joe” or “Whiplash Jake”, a tip of the hat, so to speak, to Diamond Devine’s country background.

Nick continued. "A regular meeting, isn't it?" Luna asked. Nick nodded. "You just have to stand beside me and smile. The rest is left to me to take care of." Nick explained. “Baiklah, Pak Nick.” Nick sighed at how Luna called him. "My name is Nick Luton, call me Nick or Nicky. Do not use Mr. or Mr. frills. Just Nick or Nicky." Nick warned. Luna just listened silently. "Luna." The woman reflexively straightened her shoulders.
