Zloe's eyes wandered into the sky, looking up at the dark sky with scattered stars on the firmament. "Melisam, I'm sorry," Zloe muttered a monologue. "I know you'll be mad at me after this, but ...." The footsteps interrupted Zloe's monologue suddenly. The boy turned his head in the direction of the sound source. "Luna?" He assumed it was Rula Whitey. "Is that you?" There was no answer. The footsteps were getting closer. Zloe glanced at Melisam, who was still unconscious. Suddenly, a werewolf with a gigantic body came out of the tall bushes. Zloe was surprised to see the werewolf's enormous body with terrible eyes standing before him.

Luca handed her a perfectly golden marshmallow sandwiched between graham crackers and chocolate. She took a bite, sweetness exploding on her tongue. For a while the conversation stayed light. Mara talked about the play, a modern adaptation of Antigone that she was directing as well as starring in. Luca described a new drone design he had seen online, something with folding wings and solar skin. Ethan listened, asked questions, teased them gently. Veronica watched the firelight move across their faces and felt a quiet gratitude so deep it ached.

She recognised Logan immediately. ‘Move out of the way,’ she grumbled. ‘You’re blocking my path.’ Logan furrowed his brows, surprised by her abrasiveness. ‘I think you know who I am. Alessia must have mentioned me.’ Veronica met his gaze head-on and curled her lips. ‘Who are you? Alessia knows plenty of people.’ Logan narrowed his eyes.
