Then I got out paper and wrote back. And that's how it began. Letters once a week. Phone calls twice a month. And the slow, patient work of loving someone from a distance.

I let the air go inside of me from my nose and grabbed a letter from my pocket, I held it so tight. “If I won’t get to know you, why do we have to meet this way?” I thought as I stared at the letters.

There is a misunderstanding, a sense of loneliness, longing mixed into one. And again, all of that only strengthens our relationship.

Though delivered at the wrong times here, those simple texts made my day. A few times when I tried to strike up a casual conversation, he mentioned how long his meetings were and how he was growing tired of them. The responses always came late, making me realize why long-distance relationships were harder. Again, he hadn’t yet defined our relationship. I didn’t know where I stood with him in terms of a relationship.
