Longing Rusted Furnace Daybreak Novels & Stories

Jade's POV The siren didn't just scream; it tore the world in half. It was a sound from another century, a mechanical howl powered by ancient steam and rusted lungs, vibrating through the concrete floor of the "Casting Hall" until my vision blurred. I sat huddled behind the massive, iron-reinforced base of a dormant blast furnace, my laptop open in my lap, its screen the only source of light in my immediate radius.

Due to that, he hobbled around, nearly as good as crippled. Resentment simmered between them: Sean with his grudges, Rowena with her cold shoulder. Nancy confided in me that the pair, though housemates, were at each other's throats daily, stirring up a racket that could wake the dead. The stillborn they brought home did not last long before it decayed, swarming with maggots, filling the house with a stench worse than a sewer. Rowena's grip on sanity started to slip, her days filled with wild outbursts. A video of one such episode, self-recorded, went viral and, bizarrely, turned a profit.

Flames bit at the edges of the broken courtyard. Smoke rose in choking plumes that hung in the air, staining the morning a permanent dusk. The flagstones were cracked and caked in blood, runes across them glowing dimly as if the castle was struggling to recall its former might. And at its heart, Kellan was fighting for his life.

**Morning - 9AM** Lucifer stormed back into his chambers, dripping sweat from his early morning workout at the gym. He had pushed himself harder than usual, trying to silence the turmoil in his mind. But as he opened the door, expecting to find his room meticulously cleaned and in perfect order, his eyes widened in disbelief. The room was a mess—clothes scattered on the floor, the bed unmade, and the lingering scent of April that still clung to the air.

there may not be enough magic in the world to make her return. Behind him, the flames spat. Outside, the wind howled like a thing wild something grieving. And still he did not stir. Because to stir meant to accept it. To inhale meant giving her up to the salt and plague and specters. So he stood there, in that devastated, still zone between faith and grief. Waiting. As the world started to burn once more. Citadel – Duskfall Hour The black salt had shattered the ground. The plague had asphyxiated the villages.

The trio made their way through the desolate industrial district, their steps echoing faintly against the cracked asphalt and rusted pipes that sprawled across the ground. The Lapanzo Foundry loomed in the distance—a massive husk of steel and concrete, its faded name barely visible on the old factory’s rust-eaten board. Broken windows and gaping holes in the walls stared back at them like the hollow eyes of a corpse, and the air was heavy with a metallic tang mixed with an unexplainable decay that clung to their senses.

It lasted barely a second, but its impact was catastrophic. Cyrus had sealed every gap in his apartment hours earlier, and the fireplace burned with a steady flame. After all, once the grid failed and fuel ran dry, central heating and air conditioning would turn into lifeless boxes. From then on, warmth meant fire, wood, coal—the old ways. At 2:00 sharp, Cyrus sat on the sofa before the massive floor-to-ceiling window with a beer in hand and stared at the sky. And then it came. A sudden white flare streaked across the sky. Midnight turned to false dusk, the earth glowing as though bathed in ghostly twilight.

Henry**** The fire's embers cast restless, jagged shadows across the walls, carrying the scent of smoke and the faint warmth of the crackling heat as it seeped into the room. The soft crackle blended with our unsteady breaths, the tension that had simmered between us for so long no longer restrained. It was raw, electric—a storm finally unleashed after years of suppression.

Vera Moonlock crouched beside the cold stone hearth, her fingers sifting through a handful of candle embers. The Riverside chapel lay in ruins—a dozen shuttered pews, a collapsed roof beam, and a single brazier someone had left burning. She fed the embers one brittle scrap of wood at a time until a flicker of flame caught, then coaxed it to life. Above her, the night wind rattled broken window frames; below, rats scurried through charred floorboards.

The door hung off one hinge. Rian kicked the door. It groaned open. He carried me inside. It was dry. It smelled of dust, wood rot, and old ashes. There was a fireplace. There was a rusted metal bed frame with a mattress that looked fifty years old. Rian laid me on the mattress. Dust puffed up. He stripped off his coat. He covered me. He went to the fireplace. He found dry wood in a bin. He built a fire. The flames caught. Orange light filled the room. It chased the shadows into the corners.
