Esme's instructions sounded more like a declaration of dominance. Even though I had already decided to end things with Benji, the sourness in my heart was hard to suppress.

It was time to end this for good. The potion burned bitterly as it slid down my throat, setting every inch of me ablaze. My muscles twisted in agony, like countless ants were devouring me from the inside. I clutched my chest, curling into a ball as sweat poured out of me in rivers. But none of that pain compared to the ache in my heart. I knew this suffering was necessary. It was the only way to cut Grayson out completely and start fresh. I have to admit - it's one of the most impressive cakes I've ever made. I started with a classic tiered cake, then used the Cataclysm: Earth movie poster for inspiration as I decorated the layers, creating an apocalyptic scene in sugar and icing. There aren't many bakers in this world who can make a cake that's both elegant and captures the essence of a disaster film, but I'm pretty sure I've managed it. This cake could get me work for months - maybe even years.

Lexi also wanted to make the cake as a surprise for Norm, and Marcus I had seen her drawings for it, and it was impressive. It was going to be a three tiered chocolate cake, with buttercream frosting. She was going to have a waterfall of blue icing going down all three layers of the cake, ending in a pond at the bottom. She was going to decorate the sides of each tier with flowers, and trees. At the top she was making two wolves that would have their heads tucked together standing in a meadow. It was going to take a lot of work, but I knew she would pull it off. I had also agreed to make my croissants as an appetizer.

It was practically glowing with chemical toxicity. "A Sterling Specialty," I announced. Ze 'Red Ruin. It must be eaten quickly, before ze... eh... inspiration evaporates!" Luna appeared at the doorway, clutching her stuffed rabbit. "It's a very special cake," she said with the straightest face I’d ever seen. "It’s made of feelings."
