Daniel. How are you? Fine. The reply came before I could put the phone down. Noah. What? I talked to him last night. I sat up. He called you? Midnight. Then another message. He said, “I reconsidered.” Then “I stopped.” Then he said he needed to see you. I stared at the screen. Another message appeared. A voice says out of the blue, startling me, Victor and a yawning Micah approaching us from the other side of the gazebo. I step away from my cousin, folding my hands across my chest as the other two men drew closer. “And the barrier?” I questioned. “A contingency of sorts.” “You do like to plan for the future.” “Well, there is nothing I hate more than nosey people meddling in my plans.” “Why do you hate them so much?” “I thought we covered all of that last night.” Micah groans, running his hand down his face exasperated. “They killed our families. I frowned and continued reading. **“Micah always loved making people believe he was the best at everything—games, academics, singing, sports, you name it. And to be fair, he was good. But beyond that perfect image, he was worse than hell. Micah couldn’t survive without forcing himself on women. And when I say ‘forcing,’ I mean exactly that. He didn’t just try to persuade them; he took what he wanted, consequences be damned. But somehow, he always found a way to silence his victims. That’s why he was chased out of his previous home and evicted by his landlord.

Clarissa’s wide eyes bounced between them like a spectator at a match. I dabbed my lips delicately with a napkin, pretending to be unbothered. Inside, though, the storm was building. Micah was slipping further and further from me; away from his family, away from me; straight into Alessandro’s orbit.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you ever loved her." Micah clenched his jaw and bit back his retort. The problem was he loved her too much and blinded himself to see the ugly thing growing inside her. Micah couldn't stay bonded to her when they discovered what she was up to. He knew he wouldn't be able to let her go if he didn't. He tried to get his brother to reject her, but Mason was weak and feeble-minded. It was a lost cause from the moment they met her.

Our lips come closer, and as they are about to touch, Micah begins to vanish. ‘I love you,’ is the last faint whisper I hear from him before I can no longer see him. ‘No, no, no, no! I sit in the stairwell, hug my knees and cry for a while before walking up the steps and returning to my room. I lay on my bed, turn on my side, and stare out the terrace into the night sky.
