The pendant pulsed again, and for a brief time, I felt a peculiar tug, as if a line connected me to Zephyr.
"Then why can I use it?" I refused to back down. "If it's yours, why does it respond to me?"
His smile faded, and I saw a glimpse of—doubt? Frustration? It vanished in an instant, replaced by his normal assurance.
"Because you're a thief," he said coldly. "You have taken something that is not yours, and the pendant—my pendant—does not comprehend loyalty. It is merely clinging to the most powerful source of energy it can discover. For the time being, that is you.
