Luca seemed to notice my quiet moments, the way I’d zone out mid-conversation. “Something’s on your mind,” he said after a while, leaning forward. “What is it?” I hesitated, weighing my options. Should I tell him? Confront him about the texts? What if he lied? What if he didn’t? “It’s nothing,” I said, forcing a smile. “Just... finals stress.” He studied me for a long moment, and I felt like he could see right through me. But he didn’t press. As the night went on, we talked, really talked. About childhoods, struggles, and the versions of ourselves we tried to hide from the world. She clutched the book under her arm, her steps uneven as she made her way back toward her chamber. Shadows crept closer, while flickering torchlight cast long, accusing fingers on the walls. She turned a corner—and froze. Luca leaned casually against the stone archway, as if he had been waiting for her. His cane rested by his side, but unlike Marcello’s, it was not a necessity. It was a weapon, polished and sharp, like the man himself. His smile spread slowly and venomously. “Well, well. The little collateral bride, sneaking around with books that don’t belong to her.”

He watched the other students milling about—some laughing, others exchanging greetings—and felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness. Darius glanced at him, noting the distant look in his brother’s eyes. “Hey, Damon,” Darius said softly, trying to bridge the gap. “You okay?” Damon forced a smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Just tired from the flight.” Darius didn’t buy it, but he chose not to push. A man dressed in a black charcoal suit walked over to them and slightly bowed. “Welcome, Lucianos. Please come with me, and don’t worry about your things—the servants will bring them in.”

The library was massive and bigger than anyone she had ever seen, not that she had ever been to a library but she had seen some in movies and Luca’s library looked like it should belong in a high school rather than a house. James left her alone and she allowed herself to go through the layers of books before she finally ended up picking a romance book. That was also a surprise for her. Luca’s hand had curled into a fist against the tabletop, the knuckles white. But his eyes were still locked on Alex. “Do they know who did it?” he asked, his voice flat. Alex shook his head. “They’re still investigating.” A heavy silence settled over us. I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t liked Richard. I hadn’t trusted him. But death had a way of reducing everything else to ashes. After a moment, Luca let out a slow, uneven breath. “He always knew it would end like this,” he said, almost to himself. “He spent his whole life collecting enemies.”

“You don’t understand the danger you’re in.” “And you don’t understand that I’m not one of your… toys.” He stepped toward her, and she stepped back until her spine met the bookshelf. Luca caged her in—not touching, but close enough that she felt the heat rolling off him. “My world is bleeding at the edges,” he said quietly. “There are people trying to kill me. Trying to take everything I’ve built. When someone new walks into that chaos…” He brushed her hair back with one finger, his touch burning.

My hands began shaking. “No…” The whisper escaped before I could stop it. This couldn’t be real. Could it? The Luca I knew brought Noah ice cream. The Luca I knew comforted me when I cried. Sighing, I leaned back and opened the completely tattered book again, which I actually already knew by heart. But I wanted to repeat as much as possible today so that I could get off to a good start tomorrow. I ran my finger over the familiar table of contents.
