She met his eyes. “I know that tone. Don’t do it.” “Do what?” “Attempt emotional diplomacy before breakfast.” He almost smiled. “I was only going to say that regret, when genuine, is an unpleasant thing to watch.” She looked away first. That was unfair. Because she knew Lucian’s regret was real. She simply did not know what to do with that. “He had years,” she said quietly. “Years to ask the right questions. Years to trust me. He does not get extra credit because he finally arrived at the truth after I had to survive it alone.”

“No. Truth will.” Lucian stood nearby. Silent. Watching. Damon turned toward him sharply. “Say something.” Lucian’s jaw tightened, but he did not speak. The silence was worse than denial. Damon’s voice dropped lower. “Tell him he is wrong.” Lucian finally looked up. But the look in his eyes held something Damon had never seen before. Regret. Damon felt the ground shift beneath him. “You knew?” he asked quietly. Lucian did not answer immediately. Then he said softly, “I learned recently.”

He walked closer to Brutus, their eyes locked as the air crackled with tension. Brutus nose flared, but he stood tall. He hated it when he was looked upon. Taking advice from people made him feel worthless—more like those more worthy than him. Lucian's eyes narrowed. "I thought about it, and I wondered, why would I come back to a place that rejected me? Why does my brother suddenly demand my return? What will he do to me this time around?" He paused and sipped from his glass as he gestured his finger at Brutus. "All of those are what you should have thought about before you made that choice... You should have gone there yourself."

His entire body stiffened, and for a flicker of a second, he looked like he’d seen a ghost. Lucian's reaction, however, cut deeper. His eyes found mine, and I watched something shift inside him—his face fell, not in anger, not even in surprise, but in something heavier… disappointment. There was guilt in the way he dropped his gaze, fear buried in the crease between his brows, regret pooled in his silence. But I couldn’t let that stop me. Not now. Not when I had already stepped out of the shadows. Not when my heart thundered with purpose, not dread.

Her tone was calm, motherly but firm. "We know what happened. And we know you loved her, despite everything." Lucian's throat tightened. "Then you know I failed her." Gregory stepped closer, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Son, life has a way of teaching us through pain. Sometimes, things fall apart so we can see what truly matters. Don't spend your days drowning in regret — make this pain mean something."

“But don’t forget something, King. She chose me once.” Lucian’s eyes flashed. The air shifted instantly, thickening, darkening, like the sky itself was bracing. “Oh, I didn’t forget,” he said softly. “I remember every detail.” He took another step closer. “You rejected her. You replaced her. You let her bleed alone.” Each word was a blade. His voice sharpened. “You don’t get credit for regrets.” My wolf surged forward violently, snapping against my control. “That’s enough,” I growled. “Say one more word and……”

“She still needs me. She’s just angry. I’ll go back tomorrow. I’ll get her pregnant… she’ll have another child, and we’ll forget all of this. I’ll treat her better.” He sounded unhinged, as though he didn’t fully grasp what had just happened. Irritation surged through Margaret. His remorse felt shallow and misplaced. “Are you out of your mind, Lucian?” she snapped, stepping away and letting him fall to the floor. “Here I was, thinking you finally understood… that you regretted everything.” Her voice hardened.

Ken questioned, genuinely confused by Lucian's reaction. "You bastard. After countless complaints and work you brought to my table, you dare say that to me?" Lucian snapped, his frustration spilling over. Despite the pile of work he had just finished, his agitation stemmed more from the fact that he didn't get the chance to be with Mira, a desire that had been overshadowed by the demands of his responsibilities. The longing for her company gnawed at him, leaving him irritable and impatient, his emotions raw and unfiltered in the face of his unmet desires.
