Adina held her as she cried, her own eyes heavy with unshed tears. She held Lucy until she stopped crying. Lucy sniffled, and Adina offered her some tissue. She blew her nose and cleaned her tears. Her eyeliner has smeared and rolled down her cheeks.

I didn’t wait for another word. “Lucy, we have to go,” I barked, already grabbing my keys. My pulse was a relentless roar in my ears as we sprinted to the car. The night city lights blurred past us in streaks of red and gold, but all I could see was Luna—pale, lifeless, struggling to breathe.
