The rain dragged its nails down the windows. Somewhere in my head a monitor that kept beeping, unchanging and gaunt. My phone buzzed once against the table. I didn't look. Lucy hand brushed my wrist. Warm. Intent. I let it stay. The jazz rose and fell. A laugh burst from a table behind us. I heard it through water.

He’d already heard strange stories of screaming, and exploding CD players, from a very nervous Cochran over a few beers at the Salty Sea Dog that evening. Whatever else she says is drowned out by the loud screech of stone grinding against stone. “It’s here! Lucy, come quick!” Lucy gives us a startled glance before crouching beside her stepsister. “Do you smell it?” Nova asks. Lucy leans closer, inhaling deeply. When she turns back to Nova, she’s smiling. “It still has a scent. It’s faint, but it’s there. Help me get it out. I need it closer, without the other distracting scents.” The two of them work quickly, moving stones until Lucy extracts a scrap of bloody shirt wrapped around a jagged shard of pottery. She drops the pottery at her feet and holds the shirt to her nose, inhaling deeply.

Lillian asked, completely confused, “No. Sarah is Lucien’s mate.” “Wrong,” Lucy said, walking to the table and pouring herself a glass of wine. She was too shocked to see Nyssa, she had dropped her glass by mistake. Her hand trembled slightly, “Sarah never was. That girl in the red gown- that’s Lucien's chosen mate by the goddess”. “Huh?” Lucy turned to Lillian with furrowed brows as she said, “She’s supposed to be dead.” “I wonder…” The last sentence, she whispered it to herself alone.

Past and present blurred together, marking something eternal. ... On the way back to the yacht after coming out of the sea, Marisol remained unusually quiet. Surprisingly, even Lucian didn't tease her and was equally silent. Once on board, the yacht changed course. Their next stop was Lumero. She didn't pay attention to the change in direction. For the rest of the afternoon, she sat on the sun-warmed deck with her tablet, looking up the history of the underwater city.

I laughed then, a genuine laugh that bubbled up from somewhere deep inside me, and I shook my head at her antics as we walked out into the cool evening air and headed toward her car. When I finally made it back to my grandmother's cottage, I found Lucy waiting for me in the sitting room, her laptop open and her expression focused, and she gestured for me to sit down before she even let me take off my coat. "You need to go back," Lucy said, her voice direct and unwavering, "you need to be close to Adrian. It's the only way we can get to his property easily. You're still his wife, and that gives you access that we can't get any other way."

My eyes drank in her form and I was reminded once more how long her legs were. "Might want to cover up Jason," Lucy said with a sly grin. I looked down and realized what the girl was looking at.
