"Children have a weird way of motivating us to keep going. You're a strong woman, Luna Yara…I just know you'll make it through this." Yara's lower lips wobbled, as tears trailed down her cheeks. "Maybe." She said quietly. "I hope so." She seemed so broken, even I almost believed she was truly grieving that son of a gun. The claim adjuster just kept looking at her like he wanted nothing more than to take Yara's pain away. In truth, she seemed pretty inconsolable. But all I could think of was buying her an award for the grand performance she was putting up right at that moment.

The room seems to tilt, and she has to force herself to speak slowly enough that no one can pretend they misunderstood her. “I’m Rhea Moonmere,” she says. “I’m his wife. I’m your Luna.” The silence that follows is worse than the scream. Holt looks at Darian, and Darian’s hand tightens around his blade. Elin whispers from behind them, “There is no Luna.” Rhea hears the words, but they do not fit anywhere inside her. They strike the surface of her mind and break there, useless and impossible. “That’s ridiculous,” she says. “Call Maddox.”

She is sitting on the couch and with Quinn hugging her and me kneeling in front of her. “Baby, there is nothing in the world I want more than to be lying to you,” I tell her. “Perfect, don’t take her pain unless she asks,” Teddy reminds Quinn. Quinn nods but hugs Luna anyway. “Luna?” Mr. Whitman runs to her other side. “What has happened? Where is Marsha?”

I feel bad because ultimately, I’d have to let Luna go and she’ll be the one to console the girl, dealing with more tears and the aftermath of it all. I didn’t want Luna to know I’m crying as well, despite it being impossible to do so. Instead of making it heard though, I bit lower lip to stop myself from letting out a sound, allowing the tears to cascade down my face instead. We remained in that position for a few seconds, simply crying in each other’s arms. We may have seemed pathetic even to others, but I couldn’t care less.

For how I cannot even recognize myself anymore. I cry for all these. And I cry harder because, despite all these, I still love him. I cry till there is no more tears in my eyes. I guess with how long I have held my tears, my eyes have forgotten how to produce sufficient tears. Because I wanted to cry more, but there was nothing coming out anymore. And that fact made me sadder. Don’t I have the right to cry too? I that spot where I lay, at the root of the tree, where Ma lay too, I let go that I am Luna. At that moment I became that lost girl that is sad at all life is throwing at her.

Luna sat down next to me, her hand resting affectionately on mine and squeezing it in an attempt to give me strength and encouragement. “If you can't talk, don't,” Luna said gently, and I closed my eyes tightly. “But you have to cry. Whatever is bothering you, you're going to let it out by crying. I know because I can see that you're holding back more than you think. I can sense a deep sadness, and that can only be released if you cry with all your strength.” And that's what I did. I cried over the curse that had fallen upon me, and I cried over the loneliness of my soul.

Zelos said it coldly and immediately again get me out of this place. I heard another scream from Kai. Of course, I was struggling even harder to get out of Zelos's grip. Then I saw some of Zelos's warriors starting to surround Kai. "What are you gonna do to him, Arsehole?! Let my boyfriend alone!" I hit Zelos' arm hard. There was no answer. Instead, Zelos pulled me even more forcefully. That really made me hurt and very angry. "LET GO OF ME, YOU ARSEHOLE! I'M THE FUTURE LUNA, AND I COMMAND YOU TO STOP THIS SHIT!"

The mark on my shoulder pulsed under moonlight. Not pain, something worse. It whispered my name in a tongue I’d never learned. “Do you hear it too?” Dax asked, voice shaking. I nodded. The Moon wasn’t speaking to me anymore. It was commanding me. Lira entered the war chamber in crimson, not mourning. “The Luna throne sits empty,” she purred. “And the Alpha hesitates. Perhaps I should rule.” The elders didn’t laugh. They listened. She smiled at Vaeron, then looked at me. This wasn’t politics.

I'll never forget his words that almost brought me to tears. "My Alpha, we do not mean to disobey. But our Luna has been taken from us. Now that you have found your mate, our pack is incomplete until she has been returned to the safety of our walls. You cannot expect us to stay here and wait for you to return. Our Luna needs us. We may not be as strong as some of your warriors anymore, but we are capable and willing to fight. Please do not make us stay behind when our Luna needs us. The dishonour of not being able to do our part for our pack would put us in an early grave."
