A stripe of soft blue from the nightlight cut across the floor. Lyra eased it open. Luna slept sprawled on her back, hair fanned around her head, wolf plush clutched under one arm like a shield. Her mouth was slightly open, a tiny snore barely audible. On the small table by the bed, under the plastic cup she used for water, another drawing sat. Lyra lifted the cup and picked up the paper. Four figures this time, not three. Small silver‑flecked wolf in the middle—*me*.

I smiled, forcing my voice to sound bright as I walked into the room and dropped to my knees next to her. "Good morning, Mama! Look what I made!" Lorna cheered as her eyes sparkled with excitement as she held up a piece of paper. "What is it, baby? Did you draw a picture of a princess?" I asked, reaching for the paper from her hands. "No! It’s a picture of Aunty Mina, i drew her because I like her very much!" Lorna giggled, pointing at the drawing. I looked at the paper, my heart ached as I saw the drawing, but my eyes immediately dropped to the bottom of the page. There, a few wobbly letters were scribbled in red crayon.

“Luna!” I hugged her, taking in her scent of baby powder and roses. “Why aren't you asleep my little sugarplum?” She hid her face in my chest, “I couldn't.” I nodded, knowing the real reason why. I spotted a paper in her hand. “What's that?” She pushed away from me, shoving the paper in my face. “Look, I drew a picture.” It was a drawing of a big wolf and a little wolf under a moon. “It's beautiful, Winnie.”

Harry smiled, holding her hands. “No, baby. That’s enough for today,” he said gently. “Your mum doesn’t like it when you eat too much chocolate.” Luna’s shoulders dropped. “Okay…” she replied quietly before running back to continue playing. Drew’s eyes followed Luna as she went. She was such an angel. “As I was saying—” Harry turned back to Drew. Drew suddenly stood, adjusting his suit. “That’s enough chit-chat for today.” Harry frowned slightly, clearly not done talking.

"I know you wanted more time with me when I was small." "You are still small," I said. "Not for long," she said. "No," I said. "Not for long." We sat there together with the picture book open between us and neither of us said anything more because there was nothing more to say that would change what was happening. The next morning Luna woke up before I did and I found her sitting at the small table in our room with a piece of paper and a charcoal stick drawing something careful and deliberate. I sat down across from her. "What are you drawing."
