Zephyrine Cold stone under my cheek. The smell of damp earth, old iron, and the kind of despair that seeps into rock over decades. I woke to the sound of my own breathing shallow, wet, wrong and the knowledge that the fire had not left while I was unconscious. It had only waited.

No voices or even my wolf… just a constant beeping noise. The beeping eventually got louder and louder until it felt like it was right next to me, but I still couldn’t reach out and punch it. “Grace!” Ethan’s voice was far away, but it was there. “Reach for me.” With the Moon Goddess’s voice echoing in my mind, I reached for him. Closing my eyes, I pushed my soul out as if I was grabbing him with both hands. I needed him. The comfort, the safety and the love were something I craved.

I swallowed hard, forcing my feet forward even as every instinct in me screamed to turn back. Then, I heard it. A whisper. Soft, yet insidious, curling through the tunnel like an invisible mist. It wasn’t in a language I recognized, yet the meaning sank into my bones with chilling clarity. 'Come closer…' My breath hitched. Dwayne stiffened beside me, his hand instinctively brushing the hilt of his sword. “You hear it too,” I whispered. Dwayne frowned, his brows drawing together. "Hear what, Luna?" I swore I wasn’t hallucinating.

The village was silent; the moon was low in the sky, casting a pale glow all over the trees. But the very whispers… now they were louder. You cannot fight it, Luna. You belong to us. Her fists clenched. Her heart raced. “No,” she softly swore, “I shall never let you take me.” We are not here to take you. We are you. A shiver crept down her spine. She looked down at the relic drumming against her very chest. It glowed dimly, pulsing in rhythm with her heart. Was this where the whispers were coming from? Was the relic the dark bound thing that was enthralling her?

“You are of the moon and stars, a fragment of light which will guide her way.” This card held the moon at its center, a radiant ball of silvery light that shone down on the earth. Stars twinkled in the distance. They began to move the longer I stared. I blinked, and they stilled. “The Moon, how fitting.” The Whisperer murmured from where he leaned against the wall. A near-silent snarl escaped my lips, and I froze. Zuri quirked an eyebrow at me, “Rarely are we happy with what the Goddess chooses to tell us.”

Above, the Moon hung fat and bright. Luna squinted up at Her. “Why will you not talk to me?” she whispered. She had heard elders speak of the Moon’s whispers. Of guidance in dreams. Of warmth. She had felt… something. Prickles. Tugs. Nothing so clear as a voice. Not yet. The Moon’s face shimmered. For a瞬, the cracks Luna had always seen brightened. Like veins of silver pulsing. A faint, low note thrummed through the air.

But the moment he does, he slumps to the ground and buried his head between his knees. “Helios!” I call out frantically, waving my arm. “Helios Morningstar!” In the reflection, I see Helios lifting his head at the sound fo my voice. “Laurel?” Then for a brief moment, he seems to see me, and his face breaks into a smile. Then the streams started to flow again. “Laurel,” the Moon Goddess speaks as she plays with the grass underneath her feet. Then she looked up at the night sky and says, “Do you know why the first Luna released the black mist after her child a long, long time ago?”

The conversations faltered one by one, voices dipping as heads turned. Heat flushed my cheeks, and I almost wished I’d argued harder to stay upstairs. But then Tyler walked in behind me, his presence filling the space like a tide. He placed his hand lightly at my back, steadying me. For a moment, the room held its breath. Then Micah was the first to step forward. His usual smirk was softened with something warmer as he bowed his head slightly. “Our Luna carries the future of Lunar Lake,” he said, voice carrying. The words rippled like a spark through dry grass. Warriors dropped to one knee in unison, heads bowed. Pups scrambled awkwardly after them, mimicking their parents. The air was heavy

The moon shatters a little more. The fracture widens. A tendril of black-silver mist leaks out— not falling, not drifting, descending with intent. Hunters scream. Wolves scatter. The earth ripples outward from the impact of the mist touching air. Lyra yanks me back—but the mist bends toward us, sniffing, searching. Drawn. To the bond. To the scar. To the becoming. The lead hunter shouts a prayer I recognize—one used for terrifying omens. “In the name of the Hollowed Moon, we forbid the awakening—”

Somewhere that didn't follow the normal rules. The Shadowlands. We were riding through them on horses that made no sound. Lysander's guards surrounded me, their armor so black it seemed to absorb light. Their movements were silent, their faces hidden behind dark visors. Even their horses left no prints on the silver sand beneath us. My wrists glowed faintly, the twin moon marks shimmering. Chains of shadow hung loosely around my arms. They didn't hurt. They didn't even feel tight. But they were there, a constant reminder that I wasn't free anymore.
