He picked up the paper towel and wiped the tattoo one last time, cleaning away the blood and the sweat.
"Look," he whispered.
I forced my heavy eyelids open. I looked down at my thigh. There, stark black against my pale skin, right at the top where the leg met the groin, was a small, elegant 'L'. "L," I breathed. "For Luca."
"For Life," he corrected softly. "For Love, for Lust. Take your pick."
He applied a thin layer of ointment to the fresh wound, his touch surprisingly tender now that the violence was over. He taped a clear bandage over it. "It will burn for a few days," he said, He kissed me. "Go look in the mirror," he said.
