The thrill of the hunt coursed through my veins, and I felt alive. As the sun began to set, I surveyed my catch. I had managed to capture a total of 10 animals: a wild boar, a deer, a few birds, a monkey, a python, a crocodile, a fish from the river, a rabbit, a wild goat, and a snake. I loaded them onto my carriage, drawn by my sturdy carabao. With a sense of pride, I made my way back to the palace of Tondo. I presented myself before Raja Mambang, my carriage laden with the fruits of my hunt.

Even Max, who usually could not sit still for more than five minutes, had remained perfectly motionless. Now, during free period, the class was gathered around a large sheet of poster paper, working together on a get-well card for Emory. Ruby was drawing a rainbow in the corner. Caitlyn was adding glitter to a butterfly. Max was attempting to draw a dinosaur, though it looked more like a blob with legs. "That's a T-Rex," Colt said, leaning over to look. "It's a triceratops." "It has two legs. Triceratops have four legs."

I watched as she nervously withdrew a folded piece of paper from the pocket on her apron with shaking hands. “Moana had another… episode,” she said, shakily handing me the paper. I took it with a furrowed brow and unfolded it. My eyes widened as I saw the contents of the page. It was a drawing made with dark, heavy strokes that depicted a strange knife with a slightly curved blade and a wolf’s head on the handle. It looked oddly familiar to me for some strange reason, but the pressure of the lines and the way that the drawing seemed so chaotic indicated that it was not drawn while Moana was in a normal mental state. My heart warmed. Liam ran from his playroom when he heard my voice. "Mabel!" He crashed into my legs, hugging tight. "Hi, sweetheart." I picked him up. Five years old and getting heavy. "What have you been doing today?" "Drawing! Come see!" He wriggled down and pulled me to the playroom. The floor was covered in drawings. Crayon masterpieces of stick figures and houses and dogs. "This one's you," he said, holding up a picture. A woman with long dark hair and a big smile. "And this one's Mommy. And this one's me."

I flipped a page. More of the same. I didn’t understand any of it. I was about to close it when something caught my eye. A drawing. Different from the others. It looked like… A creature. My breath caught. It wasn’t like anything I had seen before. It looked human… but not. There were lines coming from its back. Like wings. But not wings. Something sharper. Something… alive. I stared at it longer than I should have. Something about it made my chest feel tight.

Even Mondrian would have called them abstract. Nyla was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Why not?" "Because your drawings are way too abstract. No one but you could possibly understand them," Mason whined. Nyla glanced at Damon, who was nearby, and handed him the drawings. "You take a look. Can you guess what these are?" Damon examined the first one. It seemed to depict an animal—but whether it was an elephant or a hippo, he couldn't tell. Furrowing his brow, he ventured, "A walrus?"

As I bent down to pick it up, I realised it had fallen open to a specific page. The illustration staring back at me held me in place like a beast with its claws in my chest. It was a drawing of a monster with long, dried-up black hair, claw-like nails, and prominent fangs. Below the drawing was a single red drop of blood, as if it were dripping from the fangs. I narrowed my eyes, trying to decipher the ancient, jagged writing that surrounded the drawing:

Chris laughed awkwardly, “not as much hidden talents, as working at a school and having to do art projects when I started. I can draw some animals. See if you like them?” I shrugged, “let’s see what you fucking got.” Chris went to draw some animals on a paper to show me, while the rest went to work and painted the room pink. April said it was a light pink or what ever the fuck the color is called. It was pink. Suddenly Kane came up with the brilliant fucking idea to look up templates on the computer. “What about like butterflies? Or ladybugs? Or dragonflies? Those much be easier than a whole animal?” Kane said.

Max asked, his hands busy hugging a large box of new drawing supplies. "What, baby?" I asked, knowing he wouldn't wait for my answer before continuing. "I'm going to draw a tall mountain, a big ship, and a dinosaur that's friends with a robot!" he squealed with delight, his eyes sparkling. "I have lots of drawing paper now, Mommy. Doctor Jacob is so cool. He gave me all this!" I chuckled, shaking my head lightly. "Be careful not to use too much of your paper, Max. You should save some for later."

He was too handsome for an ugly person like me. I looked away from them. On my way home, I spot an elderly guy with a huge sign along the road, written, "Beware of the beast who hides in human skin that walks among us." I didn't understand why I was so frightened when I read it. Briggs, the elderly guy, was insane; he lost his mind when his daughter went missing. Nothing he wrote on that piece of cardboard was sane. Arriving home, I went straight to my room and locked myself in. I sat at my desktop and typed in the search engine, "Beast who hides in human skin."
