It feels like survival. Noah is at the table. Drawing dinosaurs. His tongue is sticking out in concentration. His little hand moves across the paper with purpose. He's making a T-Rex. It's his favorite. He's been drawing them since we brought him home. They're everywhere now. On the fridge. On the walls. On the floor. In our hearts. They're a part of our home.

"Look!" she announced proudly while showing me several drawings scattered across the blanket. "I made all these yesterday!" She must've drawn all these with the things Zachary brought for her, I sat beside her carefully while looking through them one by one. Most were colorful princesses, cats, cartoon flowers, and somehow one extremely violent drawing of Maddison being attacked by pigeons.

Master asks and I nod. "I'll be okay! We've painted the base colour so I can focus on the little animals," I say and Master sighs. "Okay but please sit on the chair," my dad says and I nod and roll my eyes. "I'll be okay!" My dad and Master start unpacking the huge flat box with the crib inside while I sit on my chair and organise my paints to paint a jungle mural on the wall. My first animal will be a tiger so I get orange to do my base colour.

With an irritated sigh, he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest to try to disguise the tension in his muscles. Megan, however, remained a few more seconds just looking at him intensely, almost as if she was trying to read his soul. Fortunately for him, after several endless moments of pure silence, she turned her attention to the last card and turned it over, revealing an image of a huge moon with the profile of a woman's face emblazoned on it. Beneath the bright moon, there were what appeared to be two howling dogs, standing right next to a river where a species of crustacean, which looked to be something between a scorpion and a lobster, seemed about to attack them.

She was somewhere around seven or eight, completely absorbed in whatever she was drawing, her tongue pressed to the corner of her mouth in concentration. I lowered myself carefully into a chair near her, mindful of my ribs, and looked at the paper. The drawing was full. Not in a crowded way, in a deliberate way, like she had a clear picture in her head and was working her way across the page with intention. There was a dragon in the top left, red and blocky with impressive teeth. Below it, a woman in a red cape with a pointed hat on a flying broom, carefully coloured with a orange crayon. To the right of that, something with fangs and a dark cape that I was fairly certain was meant to be a v

She was a little confused about the shape of the animal. Akshara diagnosed that the animal had a long neck, a large tail, and four legs. She talked to herself, "is it a giraffe... but the neck is not so long. It looked like the neck of a peacock or swan. (She then took her firefly torch to examine its legs.) One leg looked like a tiger’s paw, another looked like an elephant, and another looked like the leg of an ostrich." Akshara was puzzled to draw the picture in her mind. She even looked closely, "and the tail was hairy like a horse. The animal's face had a beak on it. So much confusion! While creating this beast, God must be freaked out. What a weird roommate!"

Miguel sat cross-legged on his bedroom floor, clutching his favorite blue crayon between his small fingers. His tongue poked out slightly from the corner of his mouth as he concentrated on adding the final touches to his drawing. "Mommy will like this," he whispered to himself, tilting his head to examine his artwork. The drawing showed two stick figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun. One tall with long black hair, one small with a big smile. Miguel and his mommy.

“It’s ticklish, Miss Cassey.” When I looked at the palms of the other children, I saw drawings of different kinds of insects, animals, and plants. There was a spider, a dragonfly, butterfly, elephant, dog, cat, tulips, and roses. She was good with her hands. All of them looked really nice. My daughter would love something like that as well. “There, it’s done. Do you like it?” I heard her say. My heart leaped. Even that voice was achingly familiar.
