I stared into his eyes—deep, coal-black eyes that looked dull and lifeless. He stared back at me just as intensely. There was something mesmerizing about them, like a black diamond that held a strange kind of beauty despite its dullness.

Jasper could only make a guess. “Are you guys in trouble?” Mabel whispered. “Don’t worry, Madam. Everything is fine. First I wobble on my feet when I try to reach higher and grab the tampon which of course makes me lose balance, I try to keep myself from falling by holding onto the woman’s shoulders but that is an even more terrible idea because she obviously hates me and wants me off her body as soon as possible. I know this because she pushes my hand away which has me reeling back. But I’m not one to give up so easily so I grab her shirt and we both tumble down to the ground. It would have been fine if our encounter ended her but of course not, I don’t have such good luck.
