Maddox turned the key, bringing the engine to life, and pulled out of the estate driveway. My eyes stayed shut for the entire journey. Surprisingly, Maddox drove unusually smoothly and steadily—nothing like the reckless, aggressive speeding from the trip down or constantly reminding me how much he could ruin me.
