I grab the silver dagger from my belt and drive it into Maeve's side. She screams and drops me. I hit the ground gasping, sucking in air, my hands covered in her blood. "You little viper," she hisses, clutching her wound. Black smoke pours from the cut. The silver is burning her from the inside. "You should have killed me when you had the chance." I rise on shaking legs. The pendant pulses back to life. My mark blazes. Maeve laughs, but it is wet, pained. "You think one scratch wins the rite? I have been feeding on blood magic for twenty years. I am immortal."

I drank his blood. Magnus took a deep breath, his expression growing serious. "Actually," he started, his tone making Cathy pause mid-rant. She felt a sudden chill, sensing there was more to come. ‘More. There's always more.’ Magnus glanced at the dragon, which had the audacity to look smug. Cathy's gaze darted between them, her heart racing. ‘Conspiracy. They're all in on it.’ "There's more," Magnus continued, his voice gentle but firm. "The dragon's been sharing its magic through my blood, protecting them because... well, they're not just wolf pups."

Almirah released a heavy breath before continuing. Vampire mages? They were the mortal enemies of saint mages. According to old horror stories, it was long ago on Celestia, specifically on Sacerus, when a certain virus plagued the kingdom, attacking human brains, and it turned some saint mages into viscous monsters. Then, the innate magic they possessed gradually changed into Blood Magic and they called these monsters as vampire mages. Saint mages of Sacerus asked for help and reinforcement from other kingdoms of Celestia and together, they banished these vampire mages until their last blood. More than that, I don't know anything. I heaved a deep sigh and returned my focus on Almirah.

So I grabbed my teddy bear and walked down the stairs. When I came into the kitchen, I didn't saw my daddy and my mommy standing there, arguing and fighting. I just saw my mommy laying on the floor in a puddle of blood. The red liquid was coming out of her belly and flooded around her. Her eyes were wide open and her brown hair had become red of her blood. I whispered her name and grabbed her hand as I knelt next to her. The tears were falling down my cheeks like a waterfall. Her blood was now on my white pajamas. My hands were painted with her blood as I tried to shake her awake.

"We should go." He went on walking and she kept on following behind him, the silence resumed between them until at last he said, "The mages developed a technique called blood tracking." "Blood tracking?" she repeated. 'I haven't heard of it.' "Yes. They use it as a means of hunting men like animals. They use their magic to create shadow creatures, conjured beasts born of darkness and imbued with a man's blood. The blood from which they are formed is that which they will endlessly pursue. They sense one thing and that is the man's blood. They are bloodthirsty in the most literal sense."

Other apotropaic magics used to protect victims from these shadow stalkers are garlic, rosemary, holy water, and wild rose. A knock on the door startled Layla from her reading. She closed the book and stuffed it back into her backpack. "Coming!" she hollered as she stood and walked to the door. When she opened it, Mia slipped inside holding something behind her back. "I've got a surprise!" Mia cooed, a devious look in her eye. "What is it?" Layla asked wearily. Mia pulled a bottle of liquor from behind her back and gave it a little shake.

Jenna didn’t understand what he meant so she just sipped her water. The Queen came down the steps a few minutes later, “Oh goodness dear, are you ok?” Jenna smiled at the Queen, “I’m okay. It's just the sight of blood. That’s happened to me since I was little.” The Queen smiled, “It's okay. I have a cousin who is the same.” Yale looked confused and looked at Adleigh. The Queen laughed, “Your cousin, Maggie.” Yale nodded. He had never seen Maggie faint from the sight of blood but then again, he only saw her during holidays and there hadn’t been any blood during any.

“There is one thing we know for certain that can trap and hold a demon, at least for a time… blood magic.” Murmurs erupted across the tent but Astasha held her ground. “Blood magic is forbidden.” The man who spoke was a brutal one. Missing an eye and half his face deformed and twisted, he was one of the few Tasha could sense was teetering on the edge of rebellion. But she met his glare all the same.

Blood. Blood magic. My lips part, my mouth dropping open. Blood magic is very dark magic. Only a few witches in Moonrise get to learn it, and Maeve was one of them. “Why did you do that to him?” I shout. “Because he’ll drop dead if he ever lets any harm come to you,” she rushes out, opening the door. “Go, Logan. Go to the temple and secure a priestess for tonight.” He looks at me, but Maeve clicks her tongue at him.
