ELENA I stood in the middle of Derek’s office, feeling like the floor had shifted beneath me. Maggie. Rogue. Friend. Savior. Silverclaw-born. My hand shook slightly as I set the glass of whiskey down on the edge of the desk. I didn’t trust myself to drink it anymore. Not without spilling. The idea that Maggie had once belonged to this place—this pack—hit like a blow to the chest. That she had once played in these halls, maybe sat in this office when she was a child. That she had grown up under this roof until her entire world was ripped away because of her father’s crimes.

“What’s that?” Maggie’s hand trembled as she reached for a photo from her bag. It was an old, worn picture of a woman holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket. She handed it to Elizabeth with shaking fingers. “That’s me,” Maggie said, her voice breaking. “And that… is you.” Elizabeth stared at the photo. Her lips parted slightly. "I don’t understand."

“Distinguished council members,” Maggie said with a sweeping arm motion, “may I present to you, Mage Harlow Nightingale from Montana.” She made a little curtsey as she flipped her arm around in my direction. I felt a little bit like a princess being introduced to the king and queen of a neighboring kingdom, only there were five pairs of eyes staring at me from across the way.

I said to her, and with that, she walked into the water till the water reached her waist. “Melvadas Chelis Almedro,” Maggie chanted as she spread her hands wide apart and her eye orbs glowed gold before her mom’s canoe caught fire. Then a heavy wind began to blow as Mag began to glow brightly. After a while, it stopped and she walked back to us. I gave her a reassuring hug and something felt different about her now. Her aura exuded power. I could feel her magic now. She was no ordinary werewolf anymore. She was now an Elder.

Better safe than sorry. Emerging from the bathroom wrapped in a towel, I find Maggie mid-monologue about her ruined future. “Maggie,” I interrupt, “you’re not losing your job. I promise.” She pauses, finally noticing me. Her wide eyes scan my face and outfit as I slip on an off-shoulder cream gown with a slit running from the lap down. Matching it with pale blue heels, I accessorize with my butterfly bracelet from Damien and a crescent moon necklace. Maggie sighs in relief when all was done, her panic replaced by a radiant smile.

She said having me worried to my feet for the fact that she knew who I was and named me out with my title.

Though the house was old, it was neat. The girl offered us seats on the sofa and she excused herself. She came back, holding a frail and fragile old lady, dressed in a white cotton dress that pooled around her feet. Her hair was covered with a white headgear and a rosary was on her neck. Her skin was pale and wrinkled. She wore glasses on her small eyes. The girl directed her towards the rocky chair and sat her down before excusing herself from the room. "Good afternoon Miss. Dorcas, I'm Tammy Jones and this is Damon Graves. We were directed to you by Sister Magdalen from St. Mary's orphanage". I paused, my gaze wandering to Damon.
