She tried keeping calm and tried focusing on house chores and reading a good book, but at the moment when she would forget everything and start to enjoy what she was doing the image of her sister's corpse would appear in her mind and perturb her again. Maggie was not the superstitious type but the events of the last days really got her and it got significantly worse when she looked out the window again and saw nothing more than a dark thick fog, she deduced that it must have expanded to the entire town.

Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

Maggie held her breath as she looked up in horror, her body trembling in fear as she weakly pulled her wrists, fighting against the ropes trying to break, the rough fibers wore badly tearing into her wrists. The glass cages were laced with silver making it impossible for her to transform or summon her wolf to heal her wounds, and being around silver increased the pain they felt by a hundred. She winced in pain again, looking up at Officer Lira with red teary eyes. “I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice shaking, tears pouring down her cheeks. “I swear, I don’t know. It was just…” she cried, stuttering and shaking her head as she cried loudly.

Our eyes meet, and a smile spreads across her face. Maggie was the best part of visiting Liam’s parents each week. I spent a lot of time talking with her after dinner while she cleaned the kitchen. Liam and his parents were too busy being up each other’s asses to know I had left the room. Spending time with Maggie and hearing about her daughter in high school was far more interesting than listening to the Aster family drone on about politics.

We all headed over to the food line, Rian walking between Tristan and I. Several pack members cast curious glances our way at the sight of Rian with us. Miss Maggie was working the buffet this evening and Rian waved to her, and she waved back. Miss Maggie was an older lady, looking to be in her mid fifties by Human standards, so perhaps in her late 100s for a werewolf. Her long brown hair had wisps of gray throughout it and was pinned back in a bun while she worked. She was taller, perhaps 5’9” or so, with a slightly curvy frame and well worn wrinkles on her hands, and laugh lines on her face.

We would not feel the lack of fire overnight and our cloaks would provide sufficient warmth. I cleared an area, and began building a little fire, using my fire striker to start it. Rivyn returned to his log and angled to capture the moonlight across the pages of his book as he opened it. I saw his hair lift in a draft of magical energy. “How can you read in such poor light?” I asked him. “It’s magic,” he was distracted. “It’s not written in ink. You wouldn’t understand.” “What’s so important about that book?” I prepared the rabbit to cook, skinning and gutting it.

I look around to see if anyone is nearby who could be playing a prank on me, but as before, there is no one. Shaking myself I gather my books ready to leave the library for the last lesson of the day. “Maggie. I’m Lyra… Your Wolf” I stare at the pile of books that I had just dropped all over the library floor. I gulp… my what? The voice replies as if hearing my thoughts “Your wolf Maggie, you’re a werewolf”.
