Fear crept into my chest as I realized how dire the situation was. Malachai smirked, his grip tightening as he leaned in closer, his breath hot against my ear. “You’re mine, Valeria. And I won’t stop until we achieve our greatest destinies.” A surge of panic hit me. I couldn’t let him take me. I couldn’t let him win. Just as I felt myself being pulled into the shadows with him, a flash of silver streaked past my vision, followed by a roar of fury. Kade. I shouted, running towards her. She wasn't moving. I heard the sound of wolves behind me. I didn't turn. Hera, please be okay. Goddess, please!!! My chest burned as I ran faster. I was enveloped by darkness. I had a weightless sensation as if I were floating in space. I was unable to determine if my eyes were open or closed. Was this the last time? In the distance, a dim silvery light suddenly emerged, getting stronger by the second. It encircled me, inviting and warm but strong. Through the void came a quiet but authoritative voice. "Awaken, Melissa." I gasped as my eyes sprung open. The ground beneath me was cold and solid, but the room Kane and I had fallen into was anything from ordinary. Ethereal light glowed on the walls, and complex symbols pulsated in time with the pendant around my neck.

Staring at the body before me, my mind went completely blank. Then, my phone suddenly rang with a strange ringtone. The screen lit up, and a single line of text appeared: [Can't believe you actually killed him. Don't just stand there! The cops will be here in ten minutes.] It wasn't a text message. It wasn't any app interface I recognized. They were just black letters on a white background on my screen. And the alert tone… it was strange, unlike anything I had ever used.

Dangerous. The last scout falls to his knees, eyes wide, mouth open in terror. And I pause. The whisper is still there, guiding, coaxing, feeding my awareness. My first kill is not clean, not honorable, not deliberate. It is panic and rage made flesh—and I feel its power like a spark igniting a forest. The forest is silent now. The only sound is my ragged breathing and the faint crackle of the earth beneath me. Smoke curls around broken trees, and the sunlight shines through it like molten gold. I lift my head, tasting the wind, feeling it carry my fire outward.

The healer rushed toward us the moment Gavin honked twice—our emergency signal. “Bring her in!” the healer shouted. We hurried through the entrance, the healer guided us into a private room and immediately shut the curtains. “What happened?” he asked as he placed cool clothes on her forehead and injected a stabilizing serum into her arm. “She’s entering her Awakening Phase,” I said quietly. “Her magic is trying to surface faster than her body can handle. In lay man’s terms, she’s a witch.” The healer froze, Iris audibly gasped, and Gavin stiffened. The air thickened with disbelief and fear.

“And is that… a mark?” She was probably referring to the huge red spot on my neck, where Alpha Kael almost marked me. I didn’t answer, I couldn't. My lips were still swollen. My skin still tingled. My soul was still screaming his name. I crawled into bed, heart racing, body buzzing, and pulled the thin blanket over my head. Mira giggled probably thinking it was a stolen kiss with a low-ranking warrior Little did she know. “Spill the tea tomorrow,” she whispered. “You little rebel.”

My vision goes spotty and the last thing I see is his golden eyes before everything goes dark.

A tingling sensation starts at my arm, another on my throat and spreads to my chest as it feels like my body is pulled up into a strong cradling embrace and a weight is hauled from me. Against all my expectations, my eyes flutter open as darkness starts to recede and a pair of amber eyes in a familiar face are only inches from mine, reflecting a blue glow that brings my sight down to where it's coming from.
