Always, always, Lumos. It's the first one most of us learn, right? The mood it sets is everything—that little pool of wandlight in the dark is the whole aesthetic. Then Nox to put it out, obviously. Wingardium Leviosa is a must for the silly, playful moments, like floating someone’s notebook or a pack of gum. It’s low-stakes and fun. I’d say Expelliarmus is critical, too. It’s the quintessential dueling spell, the one that says 'let’s spar' without being outright vicious. For roleplay, you need those basic interaction spells that let you do things in a shared magical space, not just stand there shouting 'Avada Kedavra' at each other. That gets old fast and misses the point.
Accio is another workhorse. Need a prop, need your drink, need to dramatically summon a letter? It’s the spell for that. And you can’t forget Alohomora. Half the fun in magical RP is getting into places you’re not supposed to be, solving little mysteries or pulling pranks. A locked door is just a plot device waiting for that charm. Protego is the perfect defensive counterpart to Expelliarmus, creating those back-and-forth duel dynamics. I see a lot of lists focus on the flashy combat stuff, but for sustained, character-driven scenes, the humble, utilitarian spells create more opportunities. They’re the verbs of the magical world. I’d rather have a character who’s clever with a well-timed Immobulus or a silent Locomotor spell than someone who just blasts curses everywhere. The subtlety builds better stories.
