Finding Darkness…PART TWO He pulled out his phone and tried taking pictures again, but still nothing showed up. This lead him to the conclusion that either the engraved scroll was spelled or that the scroll was magically engraved into the wall. This meant that only the supernatural could see it or the scroll could only be seen in person.

Liora smiled. The kind of smile that said I knew it. Scarlet’s fingers tightened around the glass. Her wolf stirred, low and dark inside her chest. Enough. She inhaled once then reached into her dress. Liora scoffed softly. “What, you going to cry now?” Scarlet didn’t answer, she pulled out the card. A black card. Unmarked except for a faint sigil etched into its surface...old, ancient, powerful enough that even the firelight seemed to bend around it.

She had already gone through the bookshelves, torn through drawers that hadn’t been opened in years, even lifted the corner of the ancient rug covering the stone floor—but nothing felt useful until now. Her hand pauses over an older scroll, different from the rest. It isn’t sealed, just loosely rolled and tied with a frayed red string. The parchment is brittle, the edges browned with age, but when she unrolls it, her heart skips. It's an old scroll their coven used to discern things unseen... Maybe another wing of the library, maybe some secret chamber Muzan had tried to bury. But not this. Not… this. The space opened into a vault. The walls weren’t built. They were carved. This almost felt like it wasn’t a part of the house, and a sickening sense told me it wasn’t. I just would have rather stuck to rational thought to preserve my sanity. I lifted the candle higher and gasped. Scrolls lined the walls, sealed in wax, though some had cracked open, dried blood gluing the edges like dark rust. In the center of the room lay a ritual circle, drawn in something I didn’t even know if I could identify.

Her eyes fixed on the scroll. Without asking, she reached out and touched it. The moment her fingers brushed the surface— The scroll bled. Dark red droplets began seeping from the parchment, trailing down her hands. The ink began to move on its own, writhing like a living thing, symbols shifting, ancient runes crawling across the page. Kade stumbled back. “That’s blood-binding magic—” Elaina stared at her stained fingers in horror. “Why is it bleeding?” Lucien tried to grab the scroll back, but it ignited in flame and disintegrated before he could.

As I looked closer at where each type of scroll was individually piled, there was a small label beneath it saying what the scroll was. They were selling scrolls for protection, teleportation, Magic blocking, and Shrinking scrolls for storing large items like the ones in the bottles at the front of the store. I then noticed they were also selling healing scrolls, so I took one out and looked at it, "My Father just made a business deal with the Laseuss to get his hands on some of these. How useful are they?" She squints at it anyway. Their voices fade into background noise as I step toward the far wall. A faint pulsing light catches my eye—behind an overturned chair, near a neglected corner of the room. A shelf of scrolls leans drunkenly to one side, its contents cracked, chewed by time. But one scroll glows. Sonia moves beside me, eyes narrowing. “Do you see that?” “I do.” I crouch low and reach for it, careful not to disturb the others. The parchment is strangely intact, protected by some kind of old magic. The seal is broken, but the ink inside looks like it was written yesterday.

I’d wait until I had a chance to ask them. We walked down a long entryway with white and black marble tile on the floor and plenty of golden framed paintings on either side of us, each depicting a different scene from the history of mages and shifters, I supposed. The few that I recognized were only familiar to me because I used to read a lot of fairy tales. When I saw one of a woman wearing a red cloak, standing in the forest with a wolf at her side, I raised an eyebrow. “Ah, yes! A Nightingale,” Maggie said, stopping and folding her hands in front of her. “Isn’t it lovely?”

“I would sense the magic if it were so.” I dismounted and unsaddled Coryfe as the mage sat on one of the branches of the fallen tree and drew from a bag he wore under his cloak, a small book, bound in leather, with curls of metal protecting the corners and clasping the covers shut. “We need a fire,” he said to me, his fingers stroking the cover reverently. There was no writing on the cover or binding, but I could see something had been embossed into the leather. Perhaps the embossing was the shadow of writing that had once been picked out with ink, but which time had faded or flaked away.

The silver ink began to uncoil from Mina. She fell into Kaelen’s arms, gasping for air. The silver text reached out instead for the scroll in my hand. It wrapped around the paper, pulling it into the rift of the star-floor. As the scroll vanished into the dark, the silver wall collapsed. The "Owner" let out one final, frustrated shriek of a cheated businessman as the rift snapped shut.
