A Mundane life

I woke up to the sound of my alarm, and despite it only being 7 am, I was already feeling fed up. Nevertheless, I managed to pull myself out of bed and prepare myself for another soul-crushing school day.

After I changed my clothes, I walked out of my room and down the hall to the kitchen, where my foster parents were already awake and had prepared me breakfast as they always do.

I sat down and looked at the breakfast before me, my foster Mother always made the breakfast, and she gave me a small portion of overcooked scrambled egg with two pieces of burnt-looking bacon.

Seeing these meals she prepared for me every morning only made my despair grow worse. I knew she only gave me the ruined part of their breakfast since I could see they were both eating perfectly cooked meals with twice as much on their plates as mine. They never even tried to hide it.

Eating the excuse for a breakfast, I couldn't help but think, 'Honestly, I wish she wouldn't bother, I can tell I'm just an afterthought for them, they only care about the monthly allowance they get for me, and this taste so bad I would rather just go without...'

It took me ten minutes to get down the food she gave me; I had no choice but to eat it since she would just give it to me for dinner when I got back because she doesn't like me leaving food.

After a while, I left the house to head to school. As I walked, I saw some brown-haired guy walking just ahead. It took me a moment to realise it was my friend James, but I kept quiet because I found most of our conversations annoying.

Because I was wearing shoes that made a lot of noise, he heard me walking behind him and turned around. When he saw me, he immediately had a giant smile on his face, "Zander! Why didn't you say you were behind me sooner!"

I signed slightly, "Sorry, I didn't realise it was you..."

"Oh, well, now we can walk together!"

"Sure..."

Even though I found him annoying, he was still one of the brighter sides of my life. He helped me forget about my sad life for a day with his nonsensical ramblings. While we were walking to school, I could see storm clouds forming in the far distance, ‘I guess it’s probably going to rain later.’ After a while, we arrived at school and headed to our first class.

I never really paid attention during any of my classes. They were all too simple for me; I instantly understood everything the teachers tried to teach us, or I had already learned it in my own time.

Despite my higher-than-average intelligence, they kept me in regular classes, which I found dull and boring with how simple they were. Most of the time, I fell asleep during class, and because I always got perfect scores, my teachers let me get away with it.

Throughout the whole day, I was falling in and out of consciousness from boredom, or I let myself get lost in thought. During the last class of the day, I was completely caught up in my thoughts, so I was startled when I heard the bell ring signalling the end of the class.

As I went to get up from my desk, James rushed over to me, "Hey, Zander, do you wanna walk back with me?"

I thought it over for a minute, but I realised he would just follow me back anyway, "Sure... you lead the way..."

As we walked out of the school, I looked up and noticed the storm clouds I saw earlier were now over us and looked like they might start to pour down any minute. As we made our way down the street, James was rambling at me about some pointless game, but I toned out most of it.

I could ignore most of what he was saying until he looked at me with a delighted expression on his face, "That's why I think the sequel is going to be WAY better than the first! It's going to be so awesome when it comes out!"

I couldn't help but sigh heavily, "You do remember I don't play games, right? Yet you always feel the need to tell me about these new games you're interested in that I couldn't care less about..."

James looked slightly offended by what I said, "That's because the games I talk about are awesome! I only talk about the best games that are coming out, especially this one! You need to be more excited about this, so I won't stop until you admit you want to play it too!"

"Uhh, you should stop now because that will never happen. I don't care about games, even this one you seem so obsessed with..."

"You're always like this, you know! You don't care about anything! you're the blandest and most boring guy I know!"

"I'm not bland. I just don't find anything to be that interesting, that includes your games."

"And you wonder why you're always bored..."

"Show me something interesting, and I won't complain." as I said that, James walked ahead of me in a slight huff while I was distracted by a message on my phone. I read the message, and it was from my foster Mother telling me they wouldn’t be home and to let myself in.

After I read my message, I looked up to find that James was already at the crossing. So I tried to speed up a little to catch up to make it across before the lights changed green again.

As I got closer to the crossing, James started to cross without me. As he did, I noticed a truck barreling down the road at high speed, not caring about any obstacle on the road.

I soon realised that it'll hit James at its current speed before he cleared the road, so I started to run towards him. Unfortunately, as I got closer, so did the truck. Before long, James also noticed it speeding towards him, and he froze in place, staring at his imminent death.

I managed to get within jumping distance of James, but I didn't have enough time to run the last couple of feet, so I leapt at him, pushing him out of the way just in time.

I could see the surprise on his face as he saw me push him out of the way, as he flew off to the side. Then, before I even touched the ground, I looked towards the truck an instant before it hit me.

The moment the truck hit me, I was out cold, but after a minute, I started to wake up to searing pain throughout my entire body. When I opened my eyes, I started to feel raindrops landing on my face.

All I thought then was, ‘Rain really does have dramatic timing...’ As the rain slowly started to come down harder, I looked around, and I saw James running over to me, crying, "Why did you do that?!"

James got to my side and fell to his knees beside me, I went to try and talk, but I only coughed up blood, but I didn't give up and tried again, managing to get a couple of words out, "It's fine..."

Hearing me say that, James looked furious and yelled at me, "What the hell do you mean it's fine?! If it wasn't for my carelessness, you wouldn't be lying here seriously hurt!"

For some reason, I found his emotional display slightly amusing, and I laughed slightly, which only worsened the pain. Finally, I looked James in the eye and told him, "It's not your fault. Whoever was driving that truck did this...so don't blame yourself..."

"How can I not blame myself for this?!"

I smiled slightly, "Because you're not at fault, and I'm glad I could at least save you..."

James kept on talking, but I couldn't hear him anymore. The overwhelming pain I felt not long ago also started to fade, and I began to get cold. As I looked at James, his face became blurry and started to fade, 'Damn, I can't focus properly anymore, and I'm starting to feel tired...'

As I started to close my eyes, I just saw James beginning to become frantic, but I still couldn't hear him, ‘What’s got him so worked up? I’m only closing my eyes for a minute. I need some sleep.’ Then, as I slowly began to lose consciousness, I stopped feeling the last bit of pain and felt my mind become calm and my body weightless.
