Don't let anyone see the cracks. The bus pulled into Moonlight Cove just after three in the afternoon, and Maya's first thought was that the town looked like it had been frozen in time somewhere around 1985. The bus station was nothing more than a bench and a faded sign in front of a mom-and-pop grocery store. Main Street stretched out before her, a postcard-perfect vision of coastal Maine—weather-worn storefronts, American flags snapping in the salt-tinged breeze, and flower boxes that somehow still bloomed despite the October chill.

The Silver Moon Pack's mansion stood tall and imposing as Alpha Jake and Mara arrived. The grandeur of the building was undeniable, and its walls seemed to hold countless stories and secrets within. As they entered the mansion, Alpha Jake led Mara through the spacious hallways to a comfortable guest room. The room was tastefully decorated, with deep blue and silver accents that reflected the pack's emblem. "I do," I murmured, turning back to him. His dark gaze stayed locked on me. "Most people our age can't wait to leave this place."

“I thought downtown would be a little louder than this.” I chuckle. “Main Street is, and we’re three blocks away. Though everything shuts down around ten or eleven. There are a fair amount of festivals in the summer, though, and we have one twenty-four-hour diner. And, of course, Getaway, my brothers’ bar is open until two or three. Jesse grinned slightly and shook her head. “It's not that far; we just need to cut through the forest, and there's a pathway.” “It's a great day for a stroll,” I laughed then quickened my steps to walk beside her. We continued walking down the outskirts and soon were on a paved road.

The observation settles over me like something heavy and unexpected. We reach Woodstock just before dusk. The town is exactly as I remember it. Small and quiet and pretty in the way that New England towns are pretty, like someone designed them specifically to appear on postcards. White church steeples and maple trees and a covered bridge over a cold river. The kind of place where nothing bad is supposed to happen. Hayes directs our driver down a series of increasingly narrow roads until we turn onto Maple Street, and then he holds up a hand. "Stop here."

I said while sitting in the passenger seat. "Sure ma’am." We went off and I listened to Taylor Swift’s music. I opened my eyes when I felt that the car had already stopped. We were already at the pet shop, so I went out to go inside. "Good afternoon, ma’am." The cashier welcomed me. I smiled at her and continued to walk inside the shop. I bought many treats for my dog, Misha, and also cat food for the stray cats so that they have something to eat. I paid for all of it happily while thinking about those pets that I was going to feed. My bank account is always full because I don’t really spend money that much.

“I know! I know! I promised I wouldn't cry today. But you can't blame me.
