Four weeks ago. The math was simple and it was brutal and it left absolutely no room for alternative conclusions. The doctor came back in twelve minutes. He was carrying a printed sheet this time, the results physical rather than digital, and he set it on the examination table beside her without ceremony and stood back and gave her room to look at it. She looked at it. The numbers were clear. Clinical. Arranged in neat rows that managed to contain something enormous in a very small amount of space. Positive. Four weeks. Consistent across all three tests.

I asked as I walked back into the bedroom. “About two minutes.” I remained by the door of the bathroom glancing at the kitchen sitting on the sink. Two minutes was a long time but in that moment, it felt like a lot. “It should be ready now,” the doctor called and I gulped. I walked back into the bathroom and grabbed the kit, staring at the plus sign on the screen. “What does it say?” She asked as I walked back into the room. “There's a plus sign on the screen.” I told her, turning it to show them both.

I sat at the tabl⁠e, flipped open the folder, and began t‌o read. For the fi‌rst few⁠ minu⁠tes, Marcu⁠s stood by the window,‌ checking his watch every thirty seconds. He clearly e‍xpected me to⁠ hand i⁠t back wit‍h‌in ten minutes⁠, d‌efe⁠ated by the jargon. I didn't.‍ ‌

This is not a quick process, Mrs. Russo. We have to be thorough.” Forty-eight hours. I can hold my breath for forty-eight hours if I have to. The doctors get to work immediately, drawing blood, running scans, and conducting physical assessments. Matteo stirs only a little, too exhausted to do more than whimper before drifting back into a deep sleep.

I roared, making her jump. “I-it takes up to 15 minutes, Madame De Sangre. I-I c-can’t make it go faster. I wish I could, but—” Her words trailed off as she reached for a test with her face paling a little. She raised it up to eye level before holding it out to me. I took it from her with trembling hands, looking everywhere but at the test gripped tightly within them. The doctor looked down at the other tests, quickly moving some away from the others. I let out a shaky breath before looking down at the test, sinking down to my knees as I stared at the two little pink lines on the test. I pressed my hand into my stomach.

I asked trying to sound calm as much as possible. "They are all not ready?" the doctor replied. "What does the one ready say?" I asked. "They don't share part results, Mr Brown," the doctor replied. "How long would it take for all the results to be ready?" I asked and stared at the doctor with a frown but tried to keep my cool so they wouldn't say I was having a mental issue due to the coma. "Some of the tests would take 24 hours to be ready. So everything will be ready by tomorrow noon. Some results would be released by morning," the doctor replied.

“Get it over with.” I swallow again, which does nothing to dislodge the knot. “Yeah.” When I’m finished a few minutes later, I carefully set the test on the counter and quickly turn away before I can see the results. “Three minutes,” I mutter under my breath. “The box says three minutes.” My wolf snorts in the back of my head. “You know it usually doesn’t take that long.” I purse my lips. “I’m waiting for three minutes.” “Whatever helps you feel better…”

he asked. “The simple test takes about ten minutes. If it’s positive, we are looking at a couple of days before we get the complete answer to what is in it,” his man answered. Fuck, Bane thought again. “Do the initial test. We will wait,” Bane said. The man nodded and told one of his men something. The man disappeared into the office and came back with a small case. They opened it and started the test. Bane and Jax stood to the side, with Ben standing close by, looking at the door.
