Lyra swallowed thickly, “That was our shields being taken out.” Her eyes glazed over as she slid into a mind-link. There was a loud pop and a group of warriors appeared in the center of the crowd. People stumbled back, away from the men clad in dark tactical gear. Time slowed; eyes widened as we all came to the same realization. “Those aren’t our men.” Lilac whispered. A bolt of lightning exploded from the group of warriors, turning my vision white. Static electricity had my hair lifting. Bracing myself, I jumped in front of Lilac and pulled us both to the ground. The pain never came. What did come was the stench of burning flesh.

“You’re welcome to try.” The tension was palpable, the air thick with anticipation. Then, with a sudden burst of movement, the battle began. The Nightshade warriors lunged forward, their attacks swift and coordinated, but the Shadowheart pack was ready, thanks to Bexley’s timely warning. Zyra reacted instinctively, summoning her powers.
